Can't run the original descent game on imac with OS X

Post by gretschwhtfalcon »

Hi:
I have the original descent game. Recently I tried to run it on my new imac which uses system 10.2.7, but also runs earlier applications on the classic environment (system 9.2). I installed descent, but nothing happens when you click on the icon to run the game. System 9.2 opens, but then it takes you right back to the icon. A weird thing, however, is that you can open up all the audio tracks that are part of the game. Any ideas as to why there is an apparent incompatibility? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Is your OS 9.2 bootable, or is it the crippled version that I think they're using these days (only good for Classic, but can't be booted separately)? I haven't tried running any of the Descents on my iMac, but its Rage Pro isn't supported by OS X, so 3D acceleration wouldn't work. I always had to boot to OS 9.

Hopefully one of the other Mac guys here can chime in on whether they've been able to do anything under Classic. Not sure whether anyone plays D1 much these days, though. :?

descent not running on imac

Hi and thanks for the reply:
You're absolutely right. My system 9.2 is not bootable. It only kicks in when an older application calls for it. I'm sure this makes a difference when trying to run the older software.

I Have D1 Mac ver, and can only run it in OS 9(9.2.2 on my machine) since I can boot to 9. I have 2 boot to 9 in order to fly D's 1,2, and 3, and yet, on a classic game that I got, It can only be run in OS X, go fig. (I have OS 10.3.3)

He's talking D1 here. ;)

The reason why OS X is different is because it isn't really Mac OS, it's FreeBSD with stuff on top. Most things will work, but the Classic Environment is really just emulating OS 9, so it's not a full system. Annoying sometimes, but that's how it is.

I still don't get why Apple doesn't give anyone a full OS 9 install anymore, since there's some things that just aren't compatible with the switch.
