What do you think about reopening it?
(Not sure if Diedel is still in though)

I've never played D2X-XL, but it looks really neat. Does it come with a campaign? Can anyone recommend some level sets to play? I might try and install it over the weekend (if it works on my version of Linux).

It doesn't have a campaign - yet. There might be one in the future.
As for campaigns - check
http://www.descent2.de . Pumo is also working on one that few people can wait for.

Pumo Mines is the only active D2X-XL mission project that I'm aware of. I vaguely recall ideas being floated for another one or two, but they ultimately didn't go anywhere.
It's possible something cool could have been done with D2X-XL; the issue with reviving it now is that Overload is just around the corner and looks much more likely to be the future of the Descent single-player scene.

Yeah, plus this would be a much bigger commitment than it sounds.
It wouldn't just be like building one or two smallish, generic sort of levels per person.
You would need ideas that are actually worth showing off in the D2X-XL engine and probably much more complex geometry to go with.

Even on a brand new top-line computer, D2X-XL has wonky behaviors for me. Processing light maps takes minutes; why would I want to wait so long for the fancy features? It just feels like D2X-XL suffers from some major scope creep, like "we can add this, so we should". Personally, I don't think it's worth it to revive a level project like this.
