Unmasking KKK members or thugs out to hurt people would be a good thing, no?
The broader aim of not allowing masked protesters at demonstrations isn’t that unusual. Since the 1950s, 18 states have introduced legislation making it illegal to wear masks at protests. Those laws, which were ironically put in place to combat the KKK, have since been flipped on their head to target leftist protesters.
My first thought is that I'm ok with masks for civil disobedience or protest up to the point of violence. I'm fine with the KKK wearing masks if they're just marching around. It's anonymous speech. But I can also see the danger if a masked group turns violent, so I think there has to be some sort of balance between the two poles. Maybe make wearing a mask during the commission of a violent crime an extra charge. If you're at a protest wearing a mask and other protestors turn violent, take the mask off or open yourself to the charge. Something like that.
But then I wonder how far you'd push it. Would sunglasses and a hat that obscures you're identity be ok? How about a wig? What if it's really cold, no ski masks? Would the point be to be able to identify the person?
