OH that's right! George Orwell's nightmare dystopia book 1984- otherwise known as the leftist "how-to" MANUAL on tyranny.

Trump's doing the same thing by calling the press and any books written about him as "fake news" or "Witch Hunts". Only HIS "facts" matter to him and his followers, facts that make him look great and hide his numerous warts and mistakes. If you even tell Trump that he's lying or doing something wrong, you're guilty of a thought crime against the president. So everything Trump does as president is pretty much only for the benefit of around 36% of the people in this country who are deluded enough to drink up his lies as the truth and who go on to defend him with orange-clouded eyes to the bitter end. The rest of us get to sit back on the sidelines while his lies are marketed as facts and his bigotry and racism is marketed as immigration reform or law and order. Meanwhile, we ALL as a nation bear the burden of any actions he takes as president that are based on HIS idea of the truth and his idea of the truth is sitting squarely in the twilight zone right now.

TC- do you honestly believe the stupid sh*t Trump says carries any real weight beyond his small moronic sycophantic base? I don't see anyone burning down the New York Times or attempting to murder Jim Acosta other than with harsh language.Tunnelcat wrote: ↑Sat Sep 15, 2018 2:20 pm Trump's doing the same thing by calling the press and any books written about him as "fake news" or "Witch Hunts". News Flash: The base isn't small. And while I like to imagine Trump supporters are morons, I have a quite a few friends who voted for Trump and it's interesting to see otherwise normal people engage in absurd, unhealthy reasoning. Just today I was arguing with my 77 year old immigrant friend about the number of guilty pleas coming from members of Trump's presidential campaign. He keeps absolving Trump of any wrongdoing (and it is true, Trump might be innocent, but it's a longshot). Trump is part of a phenomenon that results from a weakness in human psychology that everyone is susceptible to, even myself.Nightshade wrote: ↑Sat Sep 15, 2018 3:06 pmTC- do you honestly believe the stupid sh*t Trump says carries any real weight beyond his small moronic sycophantic base?

Trump instigating violence with his stupid sh*t-spouting mouth and the reactions of his sycophantic base, for example.Nightshade wrote: ↑Sat Sep 15, 2018 3:06 pmTC- do you honestly believe the stupid sh*t Trump says carries any real weight beyond his small moronic sycophantic base? As for conservative lawmakers, they don't use the direct in-your-face approach, they like to kill through a more hands-off method, via legislation. That way they can keep their hands clean of blood and never feel guilty.

You also seem to be conveniently forgetting this guy in Charlottesville, who ran over and killed one lefty protester while injuring whole a lot of others doing it.

And don't forget, Obama needed Secret Service protection WHILE he was still a Senator running for president, one of the earliest candidates to need it ever and you can bet it wasn't a bunch of lefties making those death threats. So don't give me that ONLY evil liberals are killers crap.

What I find endlessly amusing here is that, in its current form, modern conservatism is completely and utterly morally indefensible. There is not a single shred of decency it has left to stand on. And yet our friendly little sycophant continues to tilt at windmills while wearing the world's largest set of ideological blinders. It's almost charming in a completely fucked-up way.

Re: Banning books...thought crimes...
I've noticed a lot of the political ads that are funded by conservatives or are in support of some conservative that I hear on the radio or get in the mail are all attack ads targeted against the democratic opponent. Usually something like "this democrat running for x office helped cannibals who want to eat your babies, don't vote for that person!". Haven't seen a conservative ad that simply says "this conservative will do x if (re)elected and is a firm believer in z ideology in support of y group of people" because apparently conservatives aren't "for" anything anymore and have been reduced to "against democrats (liberal or otherwise)".
Re: Banning books...thought crimes...
Because they can't run on the past two years. What are they going to say, they're fiscally responsible after a 1.5 trillion tax cut applied to the deficit? That they're moral after presiding over literal kidnapping? That they're strong on national security after running interference to thwart investigations of an election attack? They've spent the last 40 years claiming government is bad, and proving it once elected.

Re: Banning books...thought crimes...
Uhh... is trump shutting down the mainstream media? If he did that then it would be the same thing as banning books. Calling alphabet soup networks fake news isn't the same.

I believe that modern progressivism gives a damn about the downtrodden and disenfranchised in every way that modern conservatism does not. I believe that its proposed solutions for current problems are primarily based on rational thought and proven track records instead of shameless fear-mongering and appeals to a nonexistent past ideal. I believe that the history of modern Western civilization has been one of ever-expanding rights and protections, and that the current push-back against this from modern conservatism stands contrary to everything our society purports to value. As to what that makes "good" or "evil," you tell me.
Re: Banning books...thought crimes...
When I was a demoncat it seemed to me that the "left" focuses more on helping the downtrodden and disenfranchised like you said. In my opinion if progressivism were modified a bit to uphold traditional values more and to adopt certain ideas that are typically considered "conservative" then we'd have a pretty OK combo.
Do you guys think that items like racist books should be banned or Internet only or what?

Re: Banning books...thought crimes...
Can you define conservative in this context? I think compromise is great. However, I've never seen the value in upholding tradition for tradition's sake. I question everything. If a tradition is good, it can be argued for rationally and compromise should make sense.

Re: Banning books...thought crimes...
Another example. Crazy conservatives who don't want to hear that their SCOTUS candidate was an attempted rapist at a drunken party that he attended while in he was in preppie high school, and probably underage drunk at that. Nothing like sending death threats to an assault victim just show everyone that conservatives are real he-men. I hope every voting woman out there takes note next November. Republicans don't mind giving a job in the highest court in the land to a lying pervert of an asswipe.Nightshade wrote: ↑Sat Sep 15, 2018 3:06 pmTC- do you honestly believe the stupid sh*t Trump says carries any real weight beyond his small moronic sycophantic base?
