Okay, first go to newegg and buy the NEC ND-2500A drive. It is an 8x DVD-R, DVD+R, 4x DVD-RW drive.

Okay, so where is the dual layer part? (DVD-R DL)

The ND2500A is the same drive as NECs new drive, the ND2510. The ND2510 is their Dual Layer drive.

All one has to do is update the firmware with a quick windows installer. The process takes about 45 seconds. Then you get the whole enchilada

seems that there is a few drives that offer this "bug"

you can make the LiteOn SOHW-812S (and Sony U18A, and the Gigabyte branded version as well) as well as the NEC ND-2500A and the BenQ 800 and 822 drives dual layer for nothing if you don't mind potentially voiding your warranty.

Topher, not me personally, but yes, they have.

Currently the disc's arent available in the US on a open scale, so the ppl that do have them are getting like 13 bucks for each blank... pretty gay. But anyway, when they become available everywhere I'll post results.

Price of product + $20 US for shipping. I've sent stuff to Mobi and G2.

Takes like 2-3 weeks to get it, tho', unless you want to pay for express stuff, the price of which I'm not sure.

roid: Just some food for thought...it'll cost me around $11 USD to ship a package under six pounds to Auckland, NZ from Tennessee via the US Postal Service. Not exactly the best way to go, but it beats paying nearly $40 via FexEx. However, it'll take four to six weeks for delivery, which is the real drawback. Just goes to show you how lazy our postal employees are.

Yeah, Dual Layer DVDs are like a $1.50 per gigabyte, whereas regular DVD+R is $.17 per gigabyte.

But dual layer is still cooler!

Well kurupt, I gotta agree, but sometimes it's nice to have it all on 1 DVD.

Not to mention that video presented to a client in DVD format is much more impressive than a boring old VHS.

Not that the 4.7 gigabyte disks wouldn't do that job too.

And dual layer prices will come down!

Anyhow, I have the product here, currently contemplating which machine I should install it on. Nice unti, even has a black faceplate!

Anyone have any Dual-layer media?

Ok I got mine ... now I have a problem. I have 3 copies of Nero and they are all keyed to specific CD/RW drives ... I cannot use them on this drive. Do I have to go out and buy another software package (more $$$$ obliterating the 'smoken deal') for copying CD/DVDs or does anyone know of a good freeware package I can use?

No you don't. Read the text carefully dude. All you have to do is install the demo version of Nero. DVD Shrink takes care of the rest.
