[CDN_Merlin]

So i bought a new HD today for my new system that hasn’t arrived yet. I wanted to format it and copy stuff over. My current config didn't allow for another sata power connector. So I tried another one in my box. No go. After tinkering I put everything back to normal and now my system won’t boot. It turns in, fans go then shuts off.

I checked the PS with a tester and it’s all good.
I reset the cmos and tried booting. Same result
It’s an ASUS P170p board.
The orange light comes on as well as the green light at the bottom.
It’s set to boot from an SSD and it also has an internal 1tb drive.

Everything I check online says power but it’s not that.

I didn’t touch anything else.

Any ideas???

Update

I took the RAM out and booted it. Same issue. No beeps
Put the RAM in the other slots. Same deal.

Could I have fried my MB?

You didn't mix modular cables from different PSUs did you? (Never ever do that under any circumstance.)

Does it POST if you disconnect everything but the motherboard (and GPU if equipped) power cables? Have you re-seated all the cables on both ends? It doesn't hurt to unplug every line and plug it directly back in again at both ends to make sure nothing has been partially disconnected.

Good news is whenever the new PC gets there, you can use the new PSU prior to assembly to see if that was the problem in your old PC. There is a difference between a no load tester and powering on with a load after all.

I used the cables that were in my PS box. If I have the energy I’ll disconnect all and try that

I unplugged all and tries. Same results. Made sure all connections were tight. Same results.

I’ll bring it in to get tested this week.

Yeah, the usual troubleshooting steps would be to re-seat everything including expansion cards, then clean everything to make sure no dust or debris is shorting out the board(s), then try a different PSU.

I’m thinking it’s the PS. Nothing else makes sense. I wonder if I should just buy another one and test it instead of paying a shop extra to tell me it’s the problem.

You ordered a new PC just recently right? How long until the PSU gets there? You don't have to actually install it all the way into the case, I've diagnosed bad PSUs before by just plugging my spare into the board with it hanging out the side of the case. Hell, I ran the affected computer that way for several days while I waited for a new unit to arrive.

Yeah. I’m hoping my new PC comes this week. After doing more tests I believe it’s the PS. I can get a 700w Thermaltake for 90$ tomorrow. I am selling this PC to my kid so I have to get it working.

Yeah, there is a reason I keep a spare PSU in the closet (and I've rolled them in to service like 5 times in the last 20 years so they have never gone out of warranty). Gets the machine back running the same day, gives me time to RMA the old one, and earns automatic RMA approvals because they know I already verified it was the PSU.

If I had a spare from years ago I don’t think it would power all the SATA drives. Either way hopefully I’ll be back up tomorrow.

So after installing a new power supply, it’s doing the same thing. Arghhh. Now I’ll have to get someone to look into it.

So it ended up that Bu plugging the Sata drive into the Pata connector I blew the MB, SSD and HD.

since it’s impossible to get a MB to fit my 4 yr old i7-6700k I ended up telling them to upgrade to an i3-10100 and a simple crucial 1tb SSD

This will cost me just over 500$ but the kid is buying it 400$

Technically I’m giving the PC to him as I’ve lost money in this deal.
