I have never been a big forums lurker so I never know whats allowed or not.
Is it OK to post here updates/outages/other-info that I plan on doing?
First item:
From way back, those who have been around, know that I like missions that are underused but moderately well thought out and made.
(bad spawn points are a huge turn off for me)
I recently changed my CTF from Halcyon to Aquarius2.
I feel Hally is just too overused.
Aquarius2 has all bad download links, but it can still be downloaded here...
https://sectorgame.com/descentfiles/?di ... escent%203
I think Aquarius2 is a well thought out CTF with plenty of dark hiding places if you are the flag runner and need to wait until someone returns your flag.
Second item:
My servers all run on a machine that is running Fedora linux with the servers running under WINE.
I keep the machine fairly well updated.
Fedora just came out with Fedora 33.
Either this Saturday or next Saturday, I am going to be bringing down my servers for several hours to do the update.
If all goes well it will only be a few hours.
If something goes wrong it could be a few days.
(I doubt it though)

Sure it is!
About Aquarius2: Extract this into your D3 main dir and restart the server so you will have working links (for Vortex etc.) again

I honestly did not know you could do that.
I thought that you had to rebuild the mn3 with the development tools.
Thanks.

D3Server3 tool would even serve updated download links for every mission you are running. However: Since you are running your servers on Linux this is an information that's not going to much of help for you
I am thinking of getting another link surgery done :

The update is complete.
The last time I tried d3Server3 was years ago and the wine compatibility layer was at early version 2.
I might give it a try again now that wine is firmly in to the 3 verisons.
Who knows, it might work.

I am going to bring my servers down for a few hours today to do some minor hardware work.
(The SSD sometimes take longer than it should to do things and I really think its because of an old POS SATA cable that is in there. So I am going to replace it)
EDIT: Work completed.

In case anyone is curious on the machine on which I run the servers.
First of all its very old crappy hardware.
But Descent3 servers do not need much hardware horse power at all to run so its fine.
I run 4 servers on this machine and it barely pushes a third of the processor.
I could not care less about looks, RGB unicorn puke and the like.
Its a server in my basement.
The blue wire is the SATA cable I just put in.
It was in my stock salvaged from an old server machine and is bulky and built.
The one that was in there was a flimsy old cable that came in a motherboard box.

Since Fedora 34 has been out for a while, I want to get the server upgraded at some point.
I always watch to make sure no one is using it.
So if you see my servers go missing either tomorrow or next Friday or Saturday, they should come back in a few hours.
UPDATE: The update to Fedora 34 is now complete.

Just a note.
I am going to be traveling to a relatives house for Christmas.
If there is a problem with my servers, I wont be able to do anything about it for a couple days.

There is a new version of Fedora out so either today or next weekend,
there will be a time when my servers are out for 4 or 5 hours, so I can run the upgrade.
EDIT: Server update is now completed.

Sorry for the extended outage on my servers yesterday.
I had a major problem with my cable company which started with lightning destroying my cable box.
Turns out I was on a legacy service package and their new boxes just wouldn't work.
I wound up having to replace both my cable TV box and my cable modem, then upgrade to the non-legacy service.
Turns out by doing so, I am actually going to SAVE money and not pay more.
And the best thing is my internet is now 10X as fast on download speed and 5X as fast on upload speed.
So I took the opportunity to up the number of players on my CTF server, and up the PPS on all my servers.

Just in case anyone does use my servers now and again, I just wanted to let everyone know I plan on doing some software updates over the next few days.
So if you see my servers off line, they will be back.
It might be a couple of outages over the next few days.

Sorry for my servers being out. There was a power outage at my house that I didn't catch until just a little while ago.

Nature b14ch slapped me last night hard.
(Really strong winds)
My network was out for hours. My power blinked in and out sporadically.
My servers are now back up and listed.
