ideas for using a hot-swap SSD

My Strix GL12CX has a hot-swap 2.5-inch SSD tray in the front of the case.
I havent used it, as it was just a feature that came with the system.
Any ideas for using this?
I dont go to gaming events anymore, so no need for a SSD with profiles/games on it.
Usefull as a backup, for cloning?
I honestly have no idea what SSD to get, or if it's worthwhile. A cloned drive might be great in the case of an SSD failure.
I have a couple external HDs that I backup to every few months (but they are slow).
Appreciate any input!
