Game Bandwidth usage

I've got a problem with some IT people at work, they claim that our gaming during lunch is eating up all of the bandwidth on the network. Our network consists of fully managed switches on a gigiabit backplane.

My question is: is there a program out there that I can use to prove or disprove their claims? I do not have access to the switch management software, and they will not cooperate by letting me monitor the ports in question with their software.

Thanks.

no real use disproving it.

you might bring to light what the IT people are doing at lunch, and that might bite you in the ass later.

If you are using 2k/xp to game on, you should be able to get network stats via the Task Manager.

Install net limiter, and use its bandwidth monitoring. Only the server computer actually uses any bandwidth, games are designed to run on dial up connections, LANs dont sweat them at all.

Hmmm - you got some pretty lame-a$$, know-nothing, idiot-minded IT people working there. How on Earth can they call themselves IT professionals when they don't know jack-sh1t? LMFAO.

Heh!

Now you see my problem! Actually one of them is a gamer, so I have a little bit of support, only problem is he is a lacky like myself.

Thanks for the advice guys, and I will check that program out Krom.

The actual reason people are complaining is that the entire company is sharing a single T1 line to this internet. At lunch everyone is surfing the internet, which causes delays TO THE INTERNET. The dufuses see someone gaming and assume that they are causing all of their web pages to load slow. So they complain to IT, IT doesn't want to bother researching it, so they threaten to stop all gaming.

That's why I'm trying to come up with hard evidence here.

Yeah, just comparing the bandwidth between a computer thats gaming and a heavy web serfing computer should explain whos really hogging it all.

If IT are complaining you could offer to install - and use - a program called NIMBUS (it's free - Google for it) which limits the bandwidth across a NIC card. You can enable this during lunch time - to 56K speeds while you are playing - and that way you can GUARANTEE that the PC won't use more than 5.5KB (or so) per second during the lunch hour.

This would prove beyond reasonable doubt that gaming is NOT the cause of the slowdowns.

Thank your lucky stars - here at work, with 2.2Mb/s upload and download - only 6 users, and 0ms first hop ping time (as opposed to 55ms on my DSL at home!) we aren't allowed to install any games at all. Image

Or you could really piss them off by having everyone that normally plays games start surfing the web over lunch instead. Image

When everyone starts bitchin how slow it all is, "Uhh, we werent even playing any games today..."

Of course thats only if you are extremely secure in your job. Image

Tell them to DL smaller porn files on their lunches. Stop hogging your bandwidth used for the higer purposes of gaming. Then they wouldn't notice the network choking up so much! Image
