15% boost in media encoding while still using a 32bit app to do it! Anywhere from -4% to -51% (quake3) drop [-20% average] in performance for games (bad drivers anyone?).

They should get better.

Yep, looks like AMD will have a significant advantage when 1.0 of XP64 is released. That is unless Intel licences X86-64 from AMD and tosses out the 18 Billion or so they've arguably blown on Itanium.

Interesting times! Very interesting times indeed! Image

Maybe they can trade it for SSE2

AMD already has SSE2.
Whatever Intel has, AMD can copy it, make it better, and rename it.

The new p4's (both Prescott and the EE) use SSE3 if memory serves.

As for SSE2, I can't speak for the Athlon 64 models, but the Barton XP chips do not support it. Just 3D Now!, 3D Now!+, MMX, MMX+, and SSE. Atleast according to WCPUID.

MD, you are correct on that one.
K8s do use SSE2.
You will most likely see SSE3 in the K9s.
AMD has Intel test the technologies and fix the bugs before they use it.
