The official thread at HLP

Folks, you have GOT to try this thing out. The whole thing is 44MB, but its WELL worth the download. With the advent of FS2_Open, you can run Freespace2 in just about any operating system! (OpenGL is a supported API now...though since the last build I used was 2.4, I have no clue how long it was supported.)

Heres the best part folks. YOU can now fire proper beam weapons!

So go download and enjoy! :)

If I could be bothered to install FS2 again, I'd go ahead and download that. But I can't, so I won't ;)

I bought FS2 just to support our guys and have yet to play it. Doubt I ever will.

I downloaded it and installed it. I crashes on D3D and OpenGL. I signed up for an account and reported the bugs ... I would love to play it again if I could find someone to help me learn a little more about it.

Active development is like that.

We just nailed the memory leak that was causing crashes, might want to poke back over there and have a look see ;)

we've had the source for about 2 years. It's fun to work on it and add new stuff. 3.6 was a largish release of alot of new things, and invariably, software never survives first contact with users :)

Fun stuff :)

Egads, a whole 44megs? Those animals expect us to download something of that size?

Oh.

Right.

It's not 1996 anymore. :P

I've played FS2 Open 3.5, but I don't think it has any of the really keen new skins, models, or lightmaps I've seen floating around.

3.6 has a lot of stuff in it (including a few bugs).

Haunt the forums, we post builds almost daily, bug squashing galore :)

3.6.1 should be out soon, I think we killed the last big bug.

FreeSpace development became really complicated, which is why I'm not very active in it anymore. Now everyone expects fancy new ships and new weapons, it seems. Yet, ironically, there is still no true "ship maker tool" for FreeSpace. It's knowledge that's still apparently in the hands of a few people.

I just hope that 3.6.1 fixes the damned glitch with the maxim gun not firing....
