XP Versions and repair

Okay, someone throws this box to me saying it can't boot and I have to fix it. Fair 'nuff.
I boot and XP whines about files it can't find. It suggests to boot from CD and try a repair. However, all I can do is go inside the console repair, which isn't much. It seems like the XP setup isn't picking up the XP install on the disk, probably because my CD is XP Professional and XP installed on disk is Home Edition. It just shows up as "c:\windows" in the repair console.
Am I right in supposing the XP Pro CD doesn't work with a Home install? Should I hunt for an XP home edition CD or should I suspect a shot harddrive or look elsewhere?
