IE5 to 5.5

Post by thewolfe »

IE5 to 5.5
First let me preface this post by saying that I'm not talking about my computer and the person I'm trying to help does not want to upgrade their operating system.

I'm working on a Dell dimension about five years old that came installed with Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 5.

He's having a little problem that I think may be with Internet Explorer.

The problem is that on a couple of sites the computer temporarily freezes for about 30 seconds and then is fine. This does not happen on all sites.

One example is on Yahoo they have a search window and when he tries to search it hesitates for about 30 seconds and then goes to the search engine page.

My question is: can I downloaded Internet Explorer 5.5 service pack and install it on top of his Internet Explorer 5?

Or do I have to have Internet Explorer 5.5 before installing the 5.5 service pack?

You didn't say I couldn't ask why he's not upgrading to IE6?

The main reason is that I have heard from mumerous sources that IE6 is great with XP but doesn't work well with Win98.

You'll want IE6 just for the squashed security bugs.

IE 6 is really great, I haven't heard the rumors about it not working well with 98.

Anyway, this site has links to IE 5.01 and 5.5:

The rumors are just that. Rumors. The freezing is most likely because the fool has about a dozen installs of spyware.

Do you know anyone running Win98 (actually he has Win98SE) and IE6? If you do then you haven't heard a rumor either.

Not trying to be fecetious. "Just the facts".

98 has no issues with IE6. Neither does ME.

firefox would be a better choice for normal use than ie5.5

5.5 has more problems running on 98 than 6. Experience speaking on that one, too. Oh the horror.

No probs with 98 SE and IE6, up until two days ago when I replaced it with XP... the last vestige of the 9x kernel gone from any computer in my house. Image

to answer the original question, you would need to install the base application first, unless the SP came with a full install. otherwise you would just be installing a SP of updates and not the full application.

Yep - no reason whatsoever to be using any 5.x browser of any flavour.

Umm....I've got a box in the house dualbooting 98SE and 2000. Both have IE6 installed and have no problems whatsoever. Seeing as I've been messing with computers since the Commodore 64 days, I think I know what I'm talking about. Image

IE6 on 98SE, well that reminds me of an issue I didn't know how to get rid of when I tried it a long time ago: when using Windows Explorer, you usually have to click twice on a plus or minus sign to expand or collapse a folder. That was EXTREMELY annoying.

Let's just say my 98SE partition uses IE5.

I went for the IE6 and it installed fine and cleared up the freeze ups.

Thanks to all for your posts.

I have a Mobitroll© IE6 Plugin : Fliters out all of his biased flames, rants, and opinions.

NO need for Bloatware and longer page load times with the only Nutscrape replacement linux/windows users have!
