I agree. I know those filters are tempting when you're just starting out but you gotta stay away from them

Family is good for a lot of things but critiquing artwork is not one of them.

If you want lip service regarding your art you go to your family, if you want a real critique and advice on how to improve you hit up internet forums.

I don't know how seriously you take your art or how much you want to improve. But both of us are giving you honest feedback on how to improve your work.

Remember, the second you post your artwork online you have opened yourself up to any and all criticism. Don't do it unless you have an open ear and take advantage of the feedback you recieve.

I agree fully. Family (and all friends too) are the worst possible places to go. I left some frank feedback at your Deviant page, as well as some pointers on your member page. Do yourself a favor and heed them.

I'm not going to post any of my work here yet, I'm gonna wait till at least after I pass my first Photoshop class. :P Back on topic, my photoshop teacher says to refrain from the filters as much as possible. I've been doing that and I am infact getting better :).
I'll post some pics after this project "pimping your ride":):)

Hating your fan art?

*views previous posts*

...I'm sorry, but you did ask how your fan art was, and they gave you their honest opinions. They didn't insult you or anything. My advice is to follow their advice.

Yes, I am giving you nothing but my utmost honest replies.

You really need to take negative feedback better.

And on filters:
Although i use them a lot in my work, i use more subtle, simpler ones like gaussian blur, noise, and occasionaly a few lense flares. They are flashy, addictive, and evil.

The only filter I find myself using in most of my art is Gaussian Blur (mostly for the shadow beneath their oversized feet or lights). Sometimes I'll use filters to make text look snazzier. And I'll use the sparkle filter if I need to do an anime-type "spark" effect (like on a jewel or the tip of a sword). But all of these are augmented by layer transparencies or layer effects (like screen, darken, dodge, etc).

Filters BAD.

Wise use of layers and layer effects GOOD.

I don't have paint shop pro but I am looking into getting myself a copy very soon. I wish I had the money to buy Photoshop but I don't. Currently I use Gimp, Dogwaffle, and MS Paint. Now, you should avoid useing filters when you can but they do have their place. Say, for my work which is in-game 3D art.

What I usually do, is plan out my ship skin, then skin it using the wirefram model as a template. Then I seperate all the peices and make seperate textures out of them. Then I open up MS Paint and paint directly over these textures making all sorts of complex shapes. Then I open it up in dogwaffle and use a quick gaussian blur in order to smooth out all of the edges. Then I proceed to use the dodge or burn tool to make little areas appear to be reflective. Then I use emboss or bump mapping (I use bump-mapping in Gimp) to make it look a tad more 3D. Then I open it up in dogwaffle and I use the fill tool combined with the texture option to make a complex textured fill. Say if you want a bumpy surface or something you use this option. I also use Dogwaffle for adding alpha channels. However, it would be nicer to combine all of these into one tool and then be able to use layers. I know a tad bit about layers but could someone give me a better explanation about how they work? I've used transparent layers to cut objects out of a picture and place them onto another. They are also handy to create HUD images and sometimes webpage graphics. Filters are a lot of fun to use but you need to know when and how to use them. I use them to make a finished work look much more snazzy as well. Anyway, thoughts please?

A discussion of layers probably belongs in a different thread, but essentially layers are like overhead transparency sheets. You know those projectors that your teacher used, the ones that she'd draw on in dry-erase marker? Think of each layer as one of those transparent sheets, and then stack them on top of each other.

Jasc just released the Paint Shop Pro 9 Beta, so no doubt it will release sometime in the next few months. I've been using it lately and they've made substantial improvements from the buggy version 8, including a nice overhaul of the clunky Pen Tool that I whined about so much in version 8. Guess others agreed with me. ;)

I've been thinking about getting Paint Shop Pro. Maybe I'll grab a copy when 9 comes out.
