goto the map and back out.
hit F2, switch to 32bit and back out.

I think it's fixed in 1.5 but we're never seeing that patch so it's never gonna get fixed.

Something you have to live with.

i heard that you got rid of it if you used a custom reticle (can't even be identical to the original one). Don't know if it's true, though.

Custom reticle doesn't help. I've been using one for yrs and I still get the white box. It's a openGL bug.

Custom reticle fixes the disappearing reticle bug w/ D3D.

The custom reticle eliminates the bug where a person hosting a game looses their reticle after dieing.

Grendel, if that's the case oh well. D3D sucks for D3.

I wonder what causes it, because I have a 5900 now, and I've only seen the white box once, in 3-4 months of play.

I get the white box more often with the skippy. Never with the BP and seldom with the Pyro or Tank.

Let's get this right: D3D does NOT suck for Descent 3!!

OGL might be a little faster but it doesn't support the super-pretty bump mapping of the ships and objects in D3. It's also more prone to rendering errors, where procedural textures are concerned. There are ther issues also.

Let's also understand that the reticle bug is also a sympton of a hot, overclocked GFx card. Often, dropping the speed of the card by just a few MHz results in a reticle-bug-free game. You'll know if your GFx card is too hot when the fusion cannon "reload" reticle goes white.

There are several aspects to the bug. Often the host in a P2P game loses his (or her!) reticle, and simply can not get it back at all. The white box bug is annoying, but curable.

Using Automap mostly works, but not always.

Got a 5950 -- it's sort of periodic here. I can go lengths w/o seeing it and then at some days it's almost constatly there.

And no Mobie, what I'm seeing is NOT a heat problem it's a heisenbug

Edit: "a little faster" is the understatement of the year.. :P

Bull F**cking sh*t.

I had a Geforce 4 4400 NOT OC'ed and I had this problem. I now have a ATI 9800 Pro and I STILL have this problem. It has nothing to do with the video card, it has to do with buggy openGL iomplimentation by Outrage. Rememberm, D3 was built for GLIDE and nothing else. It was rushed for the other 2 Libraries.

To fix the reticle bug!!

*DISABLE RETICLE AND STICK A DOT TO YOUR SCREEN :)*

Blue Tac works best :P

Mobi, do you honestly believe this shiat your are blabbering? Reticles disappearing and the white box are not caused by heat problems. Sorry bro, but thes issues are more gamecode related in origin than your "overheating" THEORY.

If its heat related, explain to me why the reticle box appears on a non-overclocked watercooled vid card (ti4600 for reference)that runs cool to the touch.

For that matter, Explain to me the fact that i currently run that same ti4600 in an overclocked p4 system, albeit using the stock fan that came on it, and i havent encountered this bug in almost a year, If not longer.

Hell I'd just love to know how he found this out with those monster a$$ heatsinks plastered all over his Radeon.

then again Mobius IS mr. know-it-all

Add my name to the list Mobi. I run a 9700Pro and never see much over 100F in game, but I get the bug all the time, especially when using Fusion. And, yes, I'm a CTF, Defense, Tank flying Fusion Whore. Ya'll just live with it or stay outa my sandbox. :D

Hmmm, disable reticle and put a dot on the monitor? Think that might be disruptive when I'm viewing my porno collection. :P

Here is another solution, remove your monitor altogether, and play by the printscreens output to your printer!

the d3-reticles are each 20 overlapping partial transparent textures with alpha channels, and at least 6 or 8 rendererd at the same time. probably it just hits some strange ogl-limit. just a guess.

Bringing up the automap doesn't get rid of the white square in 640 * 480 mode. That's when you have to leave and rejoin the game.

There is a fix for the disappearing reticle bug available on Planet Descent. It works by extracting all of the reticle images to your Descent 3 folder. The fix on Planet Descent doesn't work completely for the Black Pyro reticle. When the reticle disappears, one fourth of the BP reticle is missing. The reticle also disappears in Anarchy games. One can also use a HOG file editor and extract all of the images from d3.hog and merc.hog.

automap is 640x480, so your not forcing a resize

800x600 or greater : use automap or switch from 16bit to 32 bit or vise-versa will fix it

640x480 : switch from 16bit to 32 bit or vise-versa will fix it.

it is a transparency error

this explains why you always leave and rejoin.... so silly follow instructions above! :P

I wasn't talking about custom reticles. I'm talking about the real reticles. :) Don't roll your eyes at me. :P

No, it doesn't. :P I haven't had a problem with the white square in a while.

So sorry Samus....

I was trying to be nice and not abuse you, like I usually do(you lurb it)! :) Next time I'll just bash your Shiznity "2 CANS and a STRING" internet connection for starters!

Would that have made you feel better, for the reasoning behind why you leave a game multiple times in 15 minutes period??

BTW, I thought you have a []D [] []V[] []D system on the otherside of that CAN?? why are you running at 640*480 ?? :P

Neo: Thing is bud, extracting the reticle files to your D3 dir doesn't always work either.

btw, add me to the list.

I've had a Diamond Viper V550 (TNT1 chipset), Hercules 3D Prophet 4500, Visontek Geforce3 Ti200, and now my PNY Geforce4 Ti4600. ALL of them experience this issue in D3 with the vauss and fusion, and it has NOTHING to do with heating issues. If that were so, IT WOULD HAPPEN IN OTHER GAMES TOO. Now do us all a favor and

my 5600 Ultra is OC Free, and it still has bugs, ive even underclocked it just to test mr Mobi-DUMBASS's theory and it still gives me boxes. and i know for GD sure my card is not over heating.

hehe

No, that's not the reason either. ^_~ Actually, there are a lot of reasons why I do that. My 2 Cans and a Stringâ?¢ Internet connection disco-es me from the server (or almost does), and that usually happens after I leave enough times to rustle your britches. ^_~

Who said I have a PIMP system? :)

For me the reticle bug seems to be weapon dependant. I tend to get with plasma but not fusion or gauss. Go figure.

mine is any weapon, when it feels like putting that box up it puts it up, so i start fighting with the Automap to turn it off

I don't even notice the white square anymore, I just learned to play with it.
