Convert AVI to Animated GIF (Stresstest?)

Is there any way to do this short of doing frame-by-frame captures?

Well FFDshow can automate frame captures if you are using that to decode the avi.

VirtualDub can save AVI's to GIF.

File -> Save Image Sequence
However, gif is not an option. You can only save bmp or tga frames. You'll have to use a program to take all those individual frames and save them to a gif file.

Oh right, it's been a while since I've actually had to use VD for that. Right now I'm using Animation Shop 3. It's a part of the Jasc Paint Shop Pro package, and it'll do a more direct approach-- just open the AVI and save it to GIF, with all sorts of goody compression settings pro bono. I'm sure there's a 30 day trial or something available. Nothing fancy, but it works and, hey, came with Paint Shop Pro.
