You don't have to actually have automatic updates enabled, they just want you to run the service in the background. Stupid, I know. (Just because the service is running doesn't mean it will go out and install updates for you.)
In my case atleast I had to enable Automatic Updates, BITS, and Event Log(already on) and reboot for it too work at all. Then when it done I just disable them again. I check WU about once a week now since they made it a pain in the butt.

Or you could just, like, leave them on. Why do you disable them? Placebo performance gains? Tinfoil hat reasons?

Because not everyone is on broadband, and some of us actually do check WU regularly and don't need Windows doing it for us.

Why not? Are you saving more time by having it not in memory or by not having to reboot whenever you want to make sure that you're not going to be effected by the latest security bulletin?

I meant disabling the services. Not automatic updates in general.
Still, some of us prefer having more free memory. Thats why people like black viper write up guides for what would benefit us the most to kill. If you want to leave it running, whatever floats yer boat man. Its your machine, so its your choice. However, some of us actually have a clue and *gasp* check WU regularly on our own. As Bill put it, we're all individuals with individual tastes.
