D2 install error

Post by gnatman »

I'm having trouble installing D2 on my Win98 HDD.
System
Asus A7n8x
Bartrom Xp2500 processor
1 gig ram
onboard sound (disabled)
Soundblaster16
Asus GeForce 5600
My joystick is plugged ito a USB port because the gameport on the sound card doesn't seem to work. Joystick works fine with D1.
I get all to picking an install option (small, large, crazy ect...)pick option then get the error
Hopefully this pic shows up.
If anyone has a clue it would be most appreciated.
Thx,

Mike Parker

If youâ??re trying to install D2 using a CD or DVD burner they can be tricky depending on the model. Copy the CD to your HD then try installing D2 from there.

He didn't link to any image at all. He just linked to his website instead.

At any rate, I'm betting he's trying to install the WINDOWS version, which is buggier than any microsoft product. Launch the DOS setup.exe instead, and when it asks if you want to install the windows version, tell it no. Then just follow the on-screen prompts.

btw, why did you disable the onboard sound? It's a HELL of alot better than that POS SB16, and it works just fine with D1 and D2.

Just set it up as above.

You Know what runs D2 the best?

Don't Laugh...

A P233 MMX
512 Ram
8x CD
3 Gig HD
Dos 6.22 / Win 98SE Dual Boot
4-32 MB vid Card W/V2
D2 3DFX

Play that setup in Dos capped at 60 HZ and it's like silk.

The image was also a link, but the image itself now returns a 404.

And the crash dump he posted looks like a DOS 4GW generated dump, which says that he IS running the DOS version.

What always worked for me was just installing the Win95 version and then running D2X. I haven't had any problems with installation that way.

either the DOS box proess its running in doesn't have enough, or too much memory. I think its the latter.

and, if you see a window, you are not in pure dos mode./

Try booting into dos. HIT F8 during boot-up.

I built a Win98 SE system for DOS and Windows gaming, and I used to have similar problems if I had more than 256 MB of physical memory installed. Using MSCONFIG to limit the amount of visible memory didn't help if more than 256 MB of physical memory was installed.

My system:

Soyo SY-7VCAE Motherboard
Intel Pentium III 933 MHz Socket 370 Processor
3dfx Voodoo5 64MB AGP Graphics Adapter
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Platinum (Model SB4760P)
256 MB SDRAM

I would suggest trying to install with 256 MB of memory or less. Good Luck!

This is nothing more than the autodetect routine crashing. Happens with wrong or missing soundcard drivers.
