Yup, I came back to D3 from a nice 5 month absence to find PXO was dead.

crash_debug, if you need any more help, check out my
D3 Beginner's Manual. Although it needs some revising, it should help you to find games/get in chat.

Oh wait, isnt the death of PXO supposed to be the beginning of the great revival of Descent 3 now that we're free from the bounds of PXO!

according to suncho it's the greatest thing to happen since sliced bread...but i haven't noticed a great increase in games played yet.

In Suncho's defense, there hasn't been any decrease in games either. Of course, there would be if some of you old-timers came out of retirement and started actually playing the game again

It helps to have a great game first. The revivals usually come on their own.

Well, there has to actually be interest generated in playing the game before you'll see any more people playing.

We need to start something major to revive D3. We need to convince major retail stores that people actually visit (best buy, wal-mart, compusa, microcenter etc) to sell D3 again. Maybe make a new trailer, generate some TV coverage. It would be SWEET if we could get the source to D3, more specifically the fusion engine, and get a team of people working to improve the engine, like they've done with FS2. FS2 has been radically improved since the source was released. We need to drown the 1337ists with n00bs, and get enough new blood in that a few people screaming bloody murder at newbies won't make any difference. For crying out loud, the only way I could find D3 way back when when I bought it was at a computer show. D3 would be VERY heavily played if more people knew about it. All of my RL friends, when I tell them about D3 and how awesome it is, reply: "What's D3?" We need to change that.

well stryker, it's a cryin' a$$ shame, but that ain't gonna happen. no one is going to promote a 4 - 5 year old game because we love it so much. and if they did the game would not sell.
think of it this way...
in 1998 - 1999 when d3 came out, would you buy d3 or would you go buy a six year old game - say, a game released in 1992 - 1993? there are some hot shiz games out there now in terms of graphics and overall play and features. i have personally got to say that unreal 2k4 kicks a lot of ass. d3 can't compete with that shiz on the market, no matter how cool we know it to be.

So sad but oh so true ...

True, we can't nearly complete with that type of market, but we can at least steal a very small bit of it. Every little bit helps; every person you get into D3 helps out this community

just don't hold your breath that d3 will pop up on your local game store shelf. we would need a different method.

Too bad PXO wouldn't turn the server stuffs over to some die hards to keep up. It sux having to reload the entire game program just to enter a game you might not stay to play.
I liked knowing my percentage, but The whole rank and percentage thing waz hacked anyway sometime ago.
The source code was available.
Too bad no descent 4......that is what is needed.

The rank and percentage thing wasn't hacked. It was exploited using brute force of the most literal kind. You didn't need a hack. Just a LAN with internet and a weight on your space bar.
And if the source code were available, don't you think that there'd be a user-run PXO type-a thingy up by now?
Last but not least, IIRC there are several third party programs out there that will read your stats files and give you your %
