Error On Initiation

I've been out of the Descent loop for a while, and am just re-installing the game. The Installation seems to go alright, but when I launch the game through the start-up menu, or through windows it says the CD is invalad. I searched around for a bit online, and found the latest patch ( 1.4) and downloaded it. When it ran, it revamped all the files but informed me that there was an error in renaming the Descent3.exe file. I tried to update via the auto-update on the startup menu, but that also failed to connect. Any pointers or ideas as to what I should do, or if there is anything I can do, it'd be appriciated.

Welcome Back!
As someone pointed out in one of the other forums, the following site may be of help:
http://home.comcast.net/~andrewduk/D3_B ... Manual.htm
Also, do you know which version of D3 you are using (U.S. Retail, Creative Labs, Sold Out Software, etc.)?

Also, I came across this thread that seems to reference the particular error you mentioned:
phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1144&highlight=invalid+cd+rom
It's a little chaotic, but there is some enlightenment in there somewhere.

Thanks for the advice, but problems still arise. Where would the -useexedir file be located? I checked the sites for the 1.4 patches. I used both the Aus and US version. Neither seemed to work. The CD case was the cardboard version, if that helps anyone to know. The sugestion about the catche chatch doesnt work, since the only file in the catche folder is entitled "Empty". Is there anyone who has compiled a step by step process for this, since it seems to be so common?

Woot, my help page gets a plug!
Icarus, welcome back to Descent! Regarding your problem, have you tried every international version of the 1.4 patch? If none of them work, try completely uninstalling and reinstalling D3, and try to patch it again.

I am not aware of a step-by-step document, but perhaps someone else is.
The upshot of the thread referenced above seems to be two-fold. First, papag apparently "fixed" the problem by applying a no-cd patch referred to by Mobius and then used the -nomusic startup option. Mobius doesn't give the source for the patch in the thread, but I suspect he means this one:
http://teamnub.com/tools/d314nocd.zip
The other idea seems to be that there may be more than one cause for the problem and there are different solutions, so I think that is why the thread is rather "complex." If you have multiple CD-ROM drives, the suggestion to try the CD in a different drive or use the -useexedir switch might be relevant.
I haven't had this problem personally, so I can only point you to the sources of info that I am aware of.

Kudos to akula65 and anyone else who had sugsted it. The multi-CD drive was the problem. Thanks for the help.

Cool!
Top Gun, this issue seems to be one that is common enough to merit some attention in your document.

I think you're right; if I ever get around to editing it, I'll add it in
.
