D3 and XP

Seems we lost some threads about this horrible operating system and D3. Search brings up only 3 topics, which didn't help.
I installed XP 2 months ago, regrettably, and decided to load D3 last night. I cannot get out of 60hz, nor can I get mouse to work (fusion/md instafire, vauss only out of one side) no matter what I try. Reforce didn't do anything. I'm running drivers 6.14.10.6117 on an fx5900.
Are there any other things I could try? I have the framecap at 100 (Changed to 0 to see..nothing)

try using nvidia's own refresh rate override in its drivers.

Did you select your 5900 and active monitor in reforce then apply the proper settings, then go into display properties / settings / advanced button / monitor tab and check the box marked "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display"? Reforce doesnt work unless that box is checked. Additionally, if default monitor is active go into system properties and delete it. If the refresh rates that windows says are supported are too low or wrong, replace the plug and play or default monitor with the proper monitor driver before you run reforce.
Try different framecaps, depending on your mouse driver you might have to go as low as 75-85. It's better to just use reforce to set the vertical Hz to what you want and Vsync D3 in the drivers.

Don't know if this works but I always tell ppl anyway. No one has ever come back and said yay or nay as to whether it solves the problem.
DXDIAG > More Help Tab > Override Button

disable vsync in the drivers silly. Then lock them down where you want them in the command line in the setup with framecap

Proper monitor driver already installed
Hide Modes already checked
5900 drivers 6.14.10.6177 installed (Got'em off the site when I loaded this box)
-Performance settings->Vsync is already off.
-Refresh rate override already enabled, set the modes I use for games to the monitor's refresh rate.
In Reforce the dropdown is disabled with the Samsung selected. I removed the modes I don't use, verified the frequencies for the rest, hit apply, and restarted.
D3's command line
-mlooksens 1.4 -useport 2093 -nomultibmp -playermessages -nooutragelogo -nomusic -framecap 100 -nointro
Playing at 1024x768/800x600 both are 62.5fps
DXDiag's Override was a little...vague. I assume that it sets for the current rez? I dropped my desktop to 1024x768 and set that override, and tried, still nothing.

Reforce messed up the nVidia driver refresh override. Get rid of reforce, reinstall nVidia drivers and try again. Get RivaTuner for anything else that's not in the driver panel.

It's the ACPI function in XP, testi
Easiest solution is to purchase a logitech mouse and use the mouseware to map a mouse button to a keystroke. You can uncap to your hearts content after you do this
BTW why do you have "-mlooksens" in your command line.
I beleive -mousesens 1.4 is what your are after

D3 "works" natively in XP, just use directsound.

This is going to sound wierd, but it happened to me and this is what worked.
Find out what resolution and color band is being used. ...ie.. 16 bit or 32bit.
Now, go to the desktop and change it to the same res with same color range. increase your refresh rate on the desktop at these settings and save and reboot. You might also need to adjust your screen size too of course.
Start up D3.
I had to do this several times before it "grabbed". I also tried what Krom suggested to get rid of the flickering at the menu screen. Why did they use a 640x480 at 256 color ???? at that time a 800x600 would have been fine.

Tried that too, Duper, I always set up each mode I use individually in Windows.
I got rid of the mouse not working right, I just can't lose the framecap.

Or you could do this:
Default = 60Hz
To kill the framecap:

Testi try Refreshlock...its similar to reforce---however its "temporary" so to speak. If you can't find it....email me and i'll send it your way.

If you could email it, that'd be nice, the only place I saw it was a register-to-download site.

Also, make sure you have the INF file for your monitor installed.

The only problem with using Nvidias refresh rate override is it applies the override to both monitors. So if you are like me and your second monitor can only do 85 or 75 Hz instead of 100 like your main monitor, you have to use reforce instead because it doesnt break multiple monitors with different refresh rates.

Here's an odd one...
I reinstalled 61.77 from nvidias site, reset the display properties, refresh rate, vsync, etc. No Reforce this time.
Jumped into a game, and it was flawless until I fired the vauss cannon. It only came out the left side of the ship, and I was instantly locked at 62.5fps again, even after rebooting.
Maybe I will try d3d..tho' I've heard it's garbage.
Thx Baal, I'm going to try it after I try the d3d thing.
If none of'em work, I'm formatting for 2k. XP is a retarded OS anyway.

how can you tell when vauss is only firing from one side?
Anyhow, one thing you need to do is to set it to d3d and make sure that vsynch is off under d3d.
Or you will be teh slow.

It's pretty obvious, it only puffs from left side, only tracers on the left side, only impacts on the left side, the sound only comes from left side. Tho' when I released the vauss, and was instantly framecapped, the vauss worked both sides afterwards. A little stuttery, but somewhat usable.
Where in Nvidia drivers can I turn off Vsync for D3D?
RefreshForce didn't work either, thx anyway Baal.

You can't disabled it in just D3D or OpenGL with the 61.xx drivers. Its globally only. I'm not sure how long its been this way since the last driver I used was the 45.03 release for my old GF3 before I upgraded to this GF4.

Welp:
Installed 2K, installed mobo drivers, installed video card (fx5900) installed monitor driver, changed to 640x480,800x600,1024x768,1280x1024 - set refresh rates. Turned off vsync in nvidia panel, and selected refresh rate override, and set the aformentioned frequencies. Ran ReForce, adjusted frequencies, hit apply, run d3, opengl, -framecap 100 no vsync, and....
62.5fps
Win98, here I come!

Uhm, use -framecap 0. Try at least 150 to see if it changes the FPS (that are FRAMETIME FPS right ?)
Edit: n/m, read 1st post again..

Did.
I think it's a combination of older hardware. My twin boxes have been in limbo for ages now, I've upgraded both machines, and havn't even put them together yet.
I'm assuming I'll be able to take the normal steps everyone else does and remove the framecap when I do build them.

Did you try to give D3 it's own profile in the nVidia driver ? (I always do that for AA, AF, VSYNC setting) Dump ReForce and try
RivaTuner, best video driver tweaker out there -- has a low level refrsh rate override function.
Edit: D3 always uses 16bit color depth BTW (bug).

Whenever I set up D3 on a fresh install
I launch via d3d mode disable vsync, then exit relaunch in OpenGL mode disable vsync AGAIN (yes they are SEPERATE) then bliss is achieved, I went bonkers for 3 weeks until I noticed the D3D setting was overiding the OpenGL Setting
