Random freezes in D3

Hey people, I keep getting these freezes which are totally random, I first got them in level 2, then, god knows how, I made it to level 3, but now it's freezing all over the place, sometimes it freezes in the beginning of the mission, sometimes throughout.

This is the worst kind of freeze also. The screen just shows white flashes, then suddenly the computer just freezes. No alt-ctrl-del possibility either, so I gotta reset the machine everytime. The damn thing, probably screwed up my motherboard with all the reseting.

Anyway, I have tried NEARLY everything. I have installed Descent 3, then installed Mercenary, then the 1.4 patch, I made sure the patch is ACTUALLY installed, but then the freezes came. I have tried several different patches, uninstalled Mercenary, tweaked many of the graphical settings (I tried it with all settings maxed out and with minimal settings but no go). Tried Direct3D and OpenGL, but to no avail.

I'm currently running on Windows ME (yes, I know, it's not exactly a "game-friendly" OS), with a Pentium 4 - 1.5GHZ, 256MB RAM, GeForce MX 200 64MB, DirectX version installed is 9.0b, latest Nvidia drivers installed as well.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be? How can I fix it?

I believe I can eventually finish the game by playing through with the random freezes, however I fear that with all the resets my MB will break down. The sad thing is that D3 is one of the few games I would go through so much trouble for.

Will appreciate any help...

Could there possibly be an overheating CPU issue? thats known to cause lockups.

Well, it's quite unlikely since I have played several games before and after I installed D3. I didn't notice any particular problems (no crashes) and I had no degradation in performance when playing other games on this CPU.

Latest drivers for your mobo as well? What settings do you have selected in your BIOS regarding AGP?

Disable "AGP FastWrites" in BIOS.

Try with V-Sync on (Engage in Drivers AND in D3) and if you've had it on - try it off!

Update sound and video drivers. Don't use EAX in D3. Defrag hard drive.

Do you have the duel jewel bundled version of d3 with mercenary ? Did you install the specific patch for that ?

Just wondering.....

Have you tried different RAM? Just a posability. You could check it for errors.

Good luck :D
