Why is FPS so low?

I've been getting very low FPS, i mean in the singles, but only in multiplayer. I have a 2.8ghz processor with 512mb of ram, GeForce video card and run windows xp. When I play single player i get 200-500, but in multiplayer it's more like 1-80. Is there a reason for this or anyway i can fix this?

Have you clicked on setup from the D3 launcher?
If not run through that.
Use -framecap 999 in the command line and turn off wait for vertical sync on your vid card and in the game.

For starters, its -framcap 0, not 999. The latter only caps frames at 999fps. The "-framecap 0" actually disables the framecap.
That being said, could you be a little more detailed on your specs? WHICH Geforce do you have? There are a whole array of them. What's going on when your frames drop? (btw, you're going to get some drop in performance when playing multiplayer for obvious reasons, but it shouldn't be THAT much.)
What software do you have running in the background while you play D3?

Are the command lines you use for SP and MP the same ? Ie. the command line you set up in the D3 launcher will not be in effect if you start main.exe using a different program..

I have an ASUS V9529 Video Suite. In multiplayer, the frame rate is very low pretty much the whole time, but it drops to the singles now and then at randome times, more often during big battles, or when someone just died. I don't have anything else running but d3 (besides system apps), maybe they need to be cleaned.
My command lines are virtually identical except for minor things like pilot.

Hmmm, this is a tricky one.
Does it happen in ALL servers? I found that there were some servers, when they had more than about 5 or 6 people in them, sometimes made my machine choke.
Oddly, sometimes it was a particular person - like everything would be 150-200FPS and then another person joins and I'd be down to 60 FPS or lower, and locking up in battles.
Never did get to the bottom of it. Although in my mind I attributed it to ultra laggy players, or people with bad/lossy connects - or a crappy server box, or a low FPS set on the server.

Once Again If one has a Problem you must SPECIFY EVERYTHING
Problems with Multi
Vid Card
CPU
Ram
O/S
Online Connection AND TYPE
So taking a guess here
-------------------------------------------------
You have an Intergrated NIC(Ethernet) on Motherboard
Disable Autosense in Network Card's settings... and set it to 10Mb if on shared network then 100Mb.
Using USB for Network Connection?? switch to Ethernet..USB=BAD(no further assistance if using USB)
Remove everything In Network Properties Setting of your Network card(if using ETHERNET)
Except for:
Client for Microsft Networks
Files and Printer Sharing
TCP/IP.
If need be.. out of the 3 above if not on a shared network disable(not remove) all but TCP/IP

Here is my system in a nutshell:
Penium 4, 2.8ghz processor
512mb of RAM
Windows XP Home
ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard
integrated sound/network
DSL connecion (eithernet)
speeds:
download 2521 kbps
upload 322 kbps
Average latency in d3: 140ms
Single Player FPS 200-500
Multiplayer FPS 1-80
(most of the time in multiplayer, it runs at about 40-80FPS, but every few seconds it jumps down to the singles for a second or two)

Windows XP Home? SP1? SP2?
Read Bubba's Recommendations first, follow them then report results.

I got a similar setup on two machines (P4C800 Del, E & non E), both P4 2.8C, 1/.5GB, XP Pro/Home (SP2), 100MB netconnects -- w/o this problem.. Maybe some malware that's only active if there's network activity ? Resource conflict (no idea how that would happen tho) ?
On the -E board I run the
non-E sound driver tho (5.12.01.3630 instead of 5.12.01.3583). I also got the latest
Intel INF set (6.2.1.1001), Intel LAN driver (9.1) and BIOS (1.20.1b).

My first instinct is malware or some form of software interaction as well...but track down possible settings problems first. That way you have your settings correct

Device manager -- NIC properties. I run it at autosense w/o problems.

NIC stands for "Network Interface Card". The "properties" is where you adjust the settings for your network card within windows. Now, to access the device manager, all you have to do is the following:
Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select properties. Click on the hardware tab and click on the "Device Manager" button. Then select your network card from the list (the group its located in should be very obvious) and click on the Properties button. Then go from there.

Thanks for the instructions MD. However, no tab has any reference to Autosense. Network Card is "Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Adapter, Copper RJ-45." *breaths* Is there another name for Autosense or is it something that my card has as default and/or can't change?

Try the latest driver from Marvell (7.24, 11/10/04) --
*click*. I'm using that one om me P4P800 SE w/o trouble.
