The Mars Volta?

Post by Zuruck »

well, one of my customers wanted to buy me a cd and I told him to get me the Deloused in a Crematorium cd. I had not heard any Mars Volta songs or anything before, but I had heard them being discussed by other members of this board. I listened to them and I'm not sure what to think. They seem to be a mix of Pink Floyd and high octane Rush. So I smoked a joint and put them on the headphones and listened some more. I think they're good, perhaps a little out there, but does anyone have suggestions on that album?

Personally my favorite tracks are Son Et Lumiere/Inertiatic ESP, Cicatriz ESP, Televators, and Take the Veil Carpin Taxt.

You're pretty accurate in describing them as a mix between Floyd and Rush... however I wouldn't compare them to Rush per se, but yeah, definitely prog material. They also draw heavily on Zep; you can really tell at some points.

By the way, the CD is called "De-Loused in the Comatorium", which is significant because it's a concept album about a friend of the founding members of the band who overdosed on rat poison, went into a coma, survived, and then killed himself. Supposedly the titles of all the tracks are things he said as he was coming out of the coma. It's kind of hard to understand the story on the faster tracks at the beginning of the album, but towards the end the songs get a bit slower and more cohesive ("Just as he hit the ground / they lowered a toe that / stuck in his neck to the gills" ... "Was he robbed of the asphalt / that cushioned his face?").

i would say they are more a mix of led zeppelin and pre-sellout whore santana... but i suppose there is a touch of pink floyd and jeff buckley on the vocs. not hearin' the rush though.

i friggin' love deloused in the comatorium the best album i've heard in years. word on the street is that they kickarse live as well... missed them when they were here last.
