In the late 80's I got hooked on an online (remember the old BBS's and 2400 baud modems) called Trade Wars. I haven't thought about it for years until the other day. A quick google finds all kinds of information, but not anything that points me to an open game.

Does anyone here know if it is still played and if so, how does one go about getting in on a game?

i played a virtual stock market online game a few years back. it was cool, you got a few thousand dollars to start off with, and everything followed the true stock market figures so i just used any stock market site to check how i was doing.

i sucked :D, i'm glad it was virtual money.

is this liek what you are talking about?

Not at all. Trade Wars is a space commerce trading game. You start out with a certain number of cargo holds in your freighter. You pick up goods at one planet and trade them for other goods at another planet. Along the way, you can buy fighters to protect you and any planets you own. It is quite competetive.

Sounds like Galtrader, also big on Unix in the late 80's.

You can find current information on both with some Googleage!

Ahh, yes, Trade Wars. I was such a tyrant in that game. Interdicter cruisers, shielded planets, Imperial Starships, etc.... Me and my team used to love dominating in that game. Slamming 500,000+ fighers against anyone who even THOUGHT about getting on our bad side. And if you were rich, bumping your alignment up to ungodly levels wasn't a problem. Anybody attacking you was bound to go from good to dastardly evil in seconds.
