Overclocking Lock questions

1. What has Intel done to put the lock on overclocking?

2. Has anything been done by motherboard manufacturers to unlock the overclocking lock? In other words, will I have to worry about it when buying a new motherboard?

Thank you. ^_^

Depends on which motherboard you're looking at. The 865/875 boards are good overclockers generally, but the newer 915/925 boards have been 'locked' to prevent overclocking more than 10% or so.

Your answer: AMD 64!

Dunno what Intel has done, but they CERTAINLY want to make it as tough as possible to OC their cores by more than 10% or so.

Personally, (and I'm an Intel and AMD owner!) I think you'd be slightly crazy to buy any Intel CPU except a Dothan right now. That's unless you plan to spend a great deal of time ripping media.

Price/Performance wise, AMD have it all over Intel right now, and until Intel unveil dual-core CPUs, or a new generation Pentium, that situation is only going to continue. The only hitch is the availability of PCIe capable motherboards for socket 939 - but these will be flodding the market in the next 2 months.

Actually, Mobius, I was planning on going with EM64T. ^_^ But then I remembered that the EM64T platform is going to have the overclocking lock! :'(

Oh, well. :( I'll think about it. ^_^ Thanks for your help! ^_^

why bother with Intel's copy of AMD's 64-bit instructions?

why not go with the original?

Because I don't like AMD. Why, does it make a difference? :)

Oooooohhhhh Boy. The can of worms u just open. Certain ppl Like AMD, Some like Intel as their CPU. And all of them w/give you an earfull and a major debate concerning the Pro's and Con's of why they like them.

All I will say is that my PC has a AMD Chip in him, and I went w/AMD because it was recomended to me from several ppl who I know and trust.

I prefer AMD, but Intel has it's good points too. It's more of a vanilla vs. chocolate thing rather than a democracy vs. communism thing.
AMD rules at rendering and games, while Intel's best for desk work and windoze.

I prefer Intel for various reasons, but, if I was buying a CPU today, I would go AMD. Or perhaps just wait until the pendulum swings back into Intel's domain. ;)
