D1X/Kali problems

I just installed D1X v. 1.43 on my machine
(WinXP SP2) and tried to use Kali to host
a D1X "lobby game" and join my own game.
When I start the game lobby I launch my game
and go to the multiplayer menu and select
"join an IPX game" but no games show up.
I did a search on these forums and found
that you should change the IPX number for
the NWLINK driver to something other than
00000000. I tried 00000001 and 00000002,
but I still get no IPX games showing up,
only "current IPX socket is +0" and empty
slots below that. Are there any other steps
I can take?

P4 2.8, fx5700, 1.024 gb ddr ram, Win XP,
cable modem connection, Zone Alarm firewall
(which was disabled while I was trying the
above steps.)

(I posted on the Kali support board, but it
was suggested that for more advice on setting
up IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Network Protocol
to work properly I might post here)

I would appreciate any help.

with kali you do not have to set up IPX/SPX. kali will encaspulate the network protocol inside of a TCP Packet for you

But let me get this right your trying to join a game/lobby you are hosting on the same computer... will not happen

goto Kali DESCENT server 539, you know the server with the most kali users in there.. thay are playing D1/D2 all the time, so just ask them what to configure your launcher to use.

Like this

Then to launch a game on the Descent server... you click the D1 icon on the GAME BAR at the bottom!

The only time you would need to load an IPX/SPX protocol stack is if you were playing D1/D2 on your own LAN with multiple machines without the need for an additional program

The Kali support page claimed that you can start a lobby and launch into the game yourself.
I'm going to have to send them an email about this.

I had to install IPx on my system for D1x to work.

That was great advice, go to Kali DESCENT server 539.
A bunch of punks calling each other "faggots", and
when I tried to ask any D1 advice I just got flamed.

Don't bother trying to flame me on this board, what
the hell makes you think I will even come back to
read it?

are you like 5 or something? If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. If you let some of those people bother you then they've won. There are plenty of people on there that would be more then happy to help you get this problem fixed.

The D1/D2 community isn't as big as it once was so you'll have to ignore some of those that have a loud voice but don't speak for the majority of descenters in most cases. You'll just have to forgive some of them. Keep in mind that the Descent community is one of the oldest gaming communties on the internet. So those who have been around since the beginning or those who've been around almost a decade either A) have short fuses. or B) Don't give a ★■◆● and are just messing with you.

Besides, if you're going to play Descent on Kali or come here searching for advice I'll give you one good piece of advice that will serve you well if you choose to listen...

Tyranny, with all due respect, this is the exact same attitude toward new players with technical problems that we mock and despise in other communities. I was under the impression that the Descent community held itself to higher standards than this. I sent this guy here to try to get him some expert help when my own limited knowledge of Kali wouldn't cut it. Now, he's been all but driven away from Descent. For a community so desperately in need of new players, that's a definite no-no. I understand your point, but try to see it from his point of view. A softer tongue and a greater show of courtesy would go a long way. After all, kindness never killed anyone, but loudmouthed idiocity can make many enemies.

meh, it's great that people even still bother playing descent and all. Its even quite surprising that we get new D1/D2 players occassionally, but the one thing we don't need is more little bitchy whiners. New or old, it doesn't matter.

This is something all the other communities have plenty of and something that, due to Descents learning curve and the general makeup of those who stayed around long enough to learn it well, we've managed to phase a lot out.

Its good advice. You either learn to ignore those who would try to ruin your fun or you don't stay around long enough to learn the game period. Its tough love but its something that I think a good 98% of us lived through. There are plenty more people out there that once you get to know them are nice as hell and willing to extend a helping hand to a friend and plenty more willing to help new players.

Here is some more advice if he chooses to come back and read this thread again...

You don't need to launch D1 or D2 in the game lobby or anything like that. Once you find someone to play with they or you, whichever, can host a level that you've all decided on through IPX in descent and join the game that way.

Descent1 and D2 wont let you actually sit inside a level waiting for other people to join unless people have already been in that level playing. Basically if you make a new game you have to wait for others to join it before you're allowed to play inside a level.
