Back to basics - multiplayer for first-timers?

Okay, the inevitable "I'm new here!". I have descent 3, and a (broadband) internet connection. I dont know what kqwery is. Or anything. You get the idea?
Is there a complete "for dummies" style guide for using mutiplayer for someone that hasn't done it before? Where do I start?
Man, how stupid I feel
Thanks, anyone that can point me in the right direction is very kind!

If that doesn't get you through it, try my
D3 Beginner's Manual. Parts of it are grossly out of date and/or not completed; for example, I don't yet have a section about Vortex, which is probably your best bet for D3 server browsing and chatting. However, much of the info about setting up and patching D3 still holds true, so take a look at it. One of these days, I'm going to get around to rewriting and editing it, so that it provides a better resource.

Don't forget to shut off (not just minimize or hide) any programs that access the Internet: web browsers, file-sharing clients, messaging, e-mail, etc...; while you are playing.

It isn't absolutely -needed-, although if you have file-sharing clients running downloads/uploads you'll have some pretty unbelievable loss.

These links are great, but i've run into a problem. If I type the direct IP into the descent multiplayer menu and hit 'scan for games', nothing happens. Should I be waiting for longer? Also, I went through Kquery and it didn't show any available games... and I know that isn't right. Is it because of my firewall or something?
Im running XP SP2, pentium 4 HT 3.00 GHz with 512 RAM.
I have Norton antivirus 2004, Ive disabled the SP2 firewall program.
I'm on a LAN network.
I can't think of any other info that might be of importance...
I'm sorry I need so much help, but I really have being trying for ages, and I wouldnt post unless I really had to
You do great work people! Any help is of course greatly welcomed.

I'm shocked PD doesn't have Vortex available to download. Thats all you really need.

Has a built in tracker, ircchat, all you have to do is fill in the information in the various sections in the "settings" dialog that comes up and then setup what you want your screename to be in chat. It's all pretty self explanitory. Make sure to setup your D3 directory path on the D3 Settings section under "Descent" so it will run the game.
Once you get that all setup and get in chat theres a button called "D3 Serverlist". Make sure the program isn't maximized or you wont see the window that comes up listing all the games. Pick a server with people on it and you can right click and a dialog will come up and give you options on what you want to do.
Mostly you'd pick "Join Game"
.
