I has some sort of a mouseover timer- because people reflexively put the mouse over the number/symbol when they are looking for, I think it puts up the symbol corresponding to where your mouse spend the most time.

EDIT or not- I guess it's just random or something.

Hello Pat, I'd like to buy a brain...

Dude, 1st of all, if you dont follow the instructions it won't work.

Second of all, it will always be predictable because its based upon a mathematical formula.

No matter which two digit number you pick... and add the two digits of that number together, and subtract the result from the original two digit number, you will always get a multiple of 9. Each time you click on the crystal ball and then go back, they shuffle the symbols so it seems like you're always picking a different number, but in reality, you will only get a result of 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, or 81. And the symbols over those numbers are all exactly the same and completely predictable.

Duh.

Pick a number. Its digits are A and B, meaning the number is 10A + B. You add A+B together and then subtract them, getting the result (10A+B)-(A+B). The result is 9A.

So, like Lobber said, you'll always get a multiple of 9 as your result. Since all the multiples of 9 have the same symbol (randomized each time), it just puts up that symbol. Look at the symbol on "9" and click the ball without ever thinking of a number, and notice that it'll always give you that symbol.

You can defeat it by picking a single-digit number with a zero as its first digit. Then your result is zero, which doesn't usually have the same symbol as 9.

Takes about 7 seconds to figure that out. A friend sent it to me last year and couldn't figure it out. Let's put it this way - if you stare at it for longer than 60 seconds and don't understand it, you're either stupid or ignorant, and possibly both. :)

Unless you're picking something other than a positive two-digit integer (which is basically what it asks you to do)... you may need some help with your 'rithmetic. :P

Unless his positive two-digit integer has a leading zero. They weren't explicit about that...
