Ligers

Never realized the mating of a male lion to a female tiger produces a liger. What struck me was the size of the offsping. A large Siberian tiger will weigh from 400-600 lbs (these are the largest naturally occuring cats in the world. A liger will weigh 800 - 1200 lbs.
Do a google for more info if you wish.

And why do we need to cross breed? Ever look at some of the new dog breeds around? Some of them have so many health related problems it's not funny.

Case in point: My dog is a mix of a Bichon Frise and a Pomeranian. We had to have her operated on her leg (1800$) because her knee would pop out of place often when she ran/walk. If we left it alone, she's be useless now. Yes, we paid a lot of money but she has brought us tons of joy.

...and Merlin, if idiots, err, people, didn't support dogly pain and suffering by buying dogs which suffer - then hey - guess what?

The reason the Liger gets so big is because the size limiting genes of the tiger and lion are in the other sex. Some of them get truly huge, but not as big as the biggest cats to ever walk the planet. Thank goodness they're gone!

That's due to inbreeding to reinforce desirable traits, without proper culling of undesirable traits. If greedy amateurs get involved, the undesirable traits get bred back in rather than culled.

That's clearly not the case here, as OUTBREEDING is involved, not inbreeding. What we have here is a case much more similar to the Mule, which is bred from a horse and a donkey.

Incidentally, both Ligers and Tigons (the result of the converse cross) are sterile IIRC.

Correct.

Merlin: You do realize that most of the time they don't do it (as in try to breed a liger or tigon) on purpose, right? As for cross-breeding dogs, I disagree with you. If you pick the right breeds, you can get some of the best dogs you'll ever know. Do they have an increased chance of health problems? Of course, but that doesn't mean they WILL have any health problems.

Don't forget the mustang (as in the horse, not the car :D)

Results of cross-breeding. Hey Hidalgo kicked ass anyway. :D

from my above linked site:

A note about ligers and tigons: A cat born to a tiger father and a lion mother is known as a Tigon. Tigons are very similar to ligers in many ways, but are quite a bit different also. We know of at least one documented instance of a tigon being born fertile. The offspring was fathered by a tiger so it was called a ti-tigon. We have been presented with other examples of tigon/liger ofspring, including a very nice looking female tig-liger.

Minature, dumbest dog ever, chases the <any delevery service> truck and puffs all up, as if she is going to impress a 4 ton UPS truck. :P She is 20 pounds but she could eat 50 pounds in one sitting I think, she would explode if we let her have as much food as she wants. :P

I think the next dog we get will be a breed that does not have a single minded need to chase everything that moves.
