I have a MP4 video that I need to convert to one of the following formats so I can upload it to MySpace.

wmv, mpg, asx, asf

Anyone know of a free converter?

why not just change the extension?

Says it can't play because format is not supported when I changed to WMV or can't find path when I tried ASF.

When you say "I need to convert... so I can upload", do you mean that the site will only allow you to upload it if it's in one of those formats? Or do you mean you want it in one of those formats, and that the uploading is just the next step after that (which means it's unnecessary information)?

If the problem is that the site won't let you upload, just stick a .wmv extension on the end (so it would be movie.mp4.wmv) and tell whoever wants to download it to cut the .wmv extension off.

If the problem is that you actually want the video in another format, then it doesn't matter whether or not you want to upload it, so including that extra information is just confusing.

Sorry for the confusion.

The site needs the video in one of those formats to be able to play it from the site.

I also included the site name in case anyone was familiar w/ that site and particular situation.

Clearly, you don't understand embedding video or how to implement it. It's fairly complex subject too. ANY video will play - it all depends on what platform and plugins you have available.

If you go to Carleton Sheets website you can see how I embed video into a page regardless of what platform, browser or plugins you have.

There's a separate file called "Medialoader.jsp" which checks your system, finds what plugins you have, tests your bandwidth, makes a decision about what video to send to the browser (There's .MOV and .WMV files) and if your are bandwidth limited (56K) then I send a JPG image to the video window and just play a .WMA or .MOV audio-only file instead.

I also over-ride the standard video controls (where possible) and display my custom PLAY, PAUSE and STOP controls along with the title of the video. (This doesn't work on some platforms, and it defaults to standard media player controls)

You are more than welcome to download and use my Medialoader file - which is just pure cross-platform javascript. Please feel free to hack it to your heart's content.

My latest project (a follow up to this one) must work with javascript disabled too - so I have a server-side version of medialoader for that...

Does this matter, Mobi?

The site he's working with is set up to handle video of a certain type. He would like to upload video of that type, by converting a video he already has. Telling him how to embed the video using a different format in someone else's site (where he most likely has limited, if any, ability to modify the page in non-superficial ways) just doesn't make sense.

He wants to use existing tools to play his video. It seems to me we should stick to his question ("how do I convert?") instead of complicating the issue by telling him how to develop his own tools...

Mobius, yet another superb job at being a dickweed! HE DOESN'T OWN THE WEBSITE. He's trying to upload a video to MySpace, which only accepts those filetypes for its embedded video player.

Someone find a decent transcoder.

Mobius,

Just for kicks, how would I "download" the Medialoader file?

DCrazy,

You "nailed" it.

This may be a little overkill for your purposes, but it gets the job done.

Try this one. I don't know how much of the funcionality is available in the demo, but it might be enough. :)

No go on the VIDEOzilla. It would convert all files but not MP4. Thanks.

Although not free, Quicktime Pro will convert it too.
