(CNN) -- A National Guard soldier was arrested Thursday on suspicion of trying to pass information about military capabilities to the al Qaeda terrorist organization, military officials said Thursday.

Spc. Ryan G. Anderson, 26, was taken into custody at Fort Lewis, Washington, after an internal sting operation, said Lt. Col. Stephen Barger, post spokesman.

He will be charged with "aiding the enemy by wrongfully attempting to communicate and give intelligence to the al Qaeda terrorist network," Barger said.

Barger said the investigation involved the Army, the FBI and the Justice Department.

"This is part of a joint, ongoing investigation," he said. "I can't get into specifics of how the investigation started or proceeded."

Barger said it could be four or five days before charges are formally filed.

Anderson allegedly offered to pass the information to al Qaeda agents through an Internet chat room, Pentagon officials said. But it is not believed he actually made contact with al Qaeda members, the sources said.

Nope. Put him in jail. He's just a criminal.

Thank goodness you guys aren't involved in your country's justice system. Image

heh Mobi, he might face the death penalty since he was in the armed services he falls under military law and treason is one of those that the death penalty is issued for. Most likely he'll be sentenced to life in federal prison though.

It's called treason, Mobi, and that earns a death sentence in this country.

He will mostlikely spend the rest of his life, or at least a significant portion of it in Leavenworth prison. While there he will learn the fine art of turning big rocks into little rocks.

I guess he's lucky he betrayed the U.S. and not Al Qaeda. At least he won't have his head chopped off with a sword in this country. I doubt he'll be demanding the U.S. take a Sharia-like stance in his case .... repugnant piece of crap.

Exactly right. When you enter the service, you swear to protect the country and president for all enemies, both foreign and domestic. This IS treason and punishable by death. It's unlikely that he will face the death penalty, but it is possible.

I say put him in a plane and fly him into the ground.

Save time and money and just shoot him, execution style, in the back of the head. Just one shot is all it would take.

Not with my tax dollars.

Keeping someone locked up in prison for the rest of his life is very expensive.
