Ever since I installed Windows 2000 Pro on my server, I've been annoyed at XP's simple read/read & write, userless folder sharing system. I like being able to control which users can access what shared resource.

Today I finally found the advanced, or "Classic" Sharing and security model on my windows XP (Pro) machine, so I thought I'd post the location of the setting.

Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy->Local Policies->Security Options->Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts

Select "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves" instead of "Guest only - local users authenticate as Guest" in the drop-down list.

An easier way to enable "classic" sharing:

In an Explorer window select Tools -> Folder Options

On the "View" tab at the bottom of the "Advanced settings" list, uncheck "Use simple file sharing."

I think this only works in XP Pro with NTFS.

Yeah, Vanders method is much easier. I use it all the time with a administrator username and password to connect to the default $ drive share.

Some day both of you will have to learn that the easiest way isn't always the best way...
