Ultra-retro controller configs!

After quite a few years hiatus, my bud Dave and I decided to get back into the Descent scene. The only problem is that neither of us could afford new joysticks... so we got creative. Dave still had his Space Orb 360, so we scrounged until we found a site that had Win2K drivers for it. So what did I come up with?

Another friend handed me this huge joystick one day, after explaining he had found it in the trash, but thought it would still work. What I got was this:

It turns out Sony had released this for use with their Playstation port of Descent 2! I'd never seen one, so I poked around, bought a PSX to USB adapter, and 10 minutes later I'm flying with it! Talk about insane... the retail Linux D3 box is for scale. Yes, that's what I play it on. The base is over 16 inches wide.

The next trick was getting direct-weapon button mapping, which as far as I know isn't possible within the game. I picked up a USB numpad for $10, used a free key-remapping program, and velcroed it to the joystick... now I have everything mapped!

Now if I could just learn to fly again. Anyone else use anything like this?

GG today, Stickman.

That's an awesome controller. The bottles behind it really add to the effect.

Nice -- I'd give it a try if I could find one of those. Back in my D1 days (before "da twist" got invented) I's using a two stick setup. Helped a lot improving my left hand coordination :)

I think Bubbalou mentioned that he had that same controller and used it to play the PSX Descent games. Definitely beats the Dual Shock, although I don't think it's quite up to the Saitek X52's level. :P

that looks great funnystickman!

a friend of mine is the author of a good key/mouse/joystick/vrglove/macros/speech/EVERYTHING remapping program called "PIE" - Programable Input Controller.
the latest version of it can be found here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/p5glove/files

it's a very powerful program. you may find it useful with your setup.

I'd frame it as "Art Deco" and keep it as a collectable.

Beats my Saitek 3D gold and my Miscrosoft Sidewinder pro.

That's so sweet it almost makes me envious.

Yeah I have that Sony SCPH-1110 Analog Joystick, it is pretty cool

Saitek X52 is no way near CH Products level

CH Combatstick 568, CH Pro Throttle, CH Pro Pedals

Works with D2X-W32 and Descent3 no luck with D1X 1.43gl due to lack of real USB support.
So I use this system with gameport controllers for that

Oh man, this is sick...

I finally took the time to compile D2x and D1x,
and man, am I glad I did! Here's the end result.
The "KillStick" (tm) works in all three just fine.

(and no it's not photoshopped! This is XFCE
desktop on dualview, running all three, yes,
at the same time)

1280 x 1024 - This office computer sucks, that's the highest res supported by the crap onboard intel graphics.

Have mercy on me ;)
