Yes. a very disfunctional family. the cop isn't just there for the theif.

Damn it, I hate these types of things. You'd think the cop being there would stop the parents from slapping the kids around, too. :P

Yes, and I cant solve it without occasionally leaving the theif all by himself on one side of the beach (Which is the only constraint there really should be, but it isn't one, especially sence the handcuffs arn't on).

It can't be done.

Screw it; I'm completely stuck. I get the criminal on one side of the river, and then whenever someone else goes over, the slapfest begins. :P

I can't solve it. Best I can do is everyone except the father and 2 sons gets across with he raft on the opposite side.

I saw a version of this in a comp sci class. Except it used cannibals and missionaries. You were supposed to solve it with a recursive algorithm.

Thinking it through and trial and error work well too

Easy. Only part that made it difficult at all was the fact that you had to leave the prisoner on the island alone several times. Thus the prisoner would escape.

Heh, I learned how to solve problems like this in High School Geometry. Purdy fun stuff but relativly simple once you get the concept behind it. :)

Doesn't the 3rd move violate the rule about dad can't be w/ daughters w/o mom?

Doh! Typed that wrong. It was 4:30 A.M. and no sleep under my belt. A few hours after I did the puzzle so I was also doing it from memory at the time, heh.

There, fixed within a mere 20-30 seconds of thought hehe. :)

Not quite, no. You had a couple boats going the same direction twice in a row and stuff like that...
>cop-convict
<cop
>cop-daughter 1
<cop-convict

Try: >mom-daughter 2
Delete: <mom-daughter 1 (can't make the boat go the same way twice!)

<mom
>mom-dad
<dad
>cop-convict
<mom
>mom-dad
<dad
>dad- boy 1

Delete: <dad (would be leaving one boy over with mom)
Instead: <cop - crook
... >cop-boy 2
... <cop
... >cop-crook
Done
Doh! Bah, I'm asleep. Anyway, I only had to do it once when I played it. :P I'm too tired to even contemplate the spelling of my own name at this point. :\

BTW, that was sort of a test on my part. I wanted to see exactly how desperate you guys are to pick at me. I see many mistakes others on this board make from day to day but I at least have the respect/kindness to leave it be. It's called being human and having a life other than what is on the net.

Yes I meant daughter 2 instead of 1 when I wrote it and I knew it. :) I was too lazy to change it and figured that I would like to see how nit picky people are. :D

LOL... nice after-the-fact rationalization, bro ;)

I think the main reason people are picking on you is because you keep saying it's "relatively simple" and "easy" and requires "mere... seconds of thought". Yet your first attempt didn't work, and your subsequent attempts to repair the solution haven't fared much better.
