anti-gun control argument once thought to be silly hyperbole

Post by Will Robinson »

Well, I remember when I could say "What's next, kitchen knives? and the retort would be 'Don't be silly...'.
Hmmm....now I wonder, what's next, the hammer?

Some interesting quotes from the article:

"A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase"

Seems to be some of us here were predicting Britains crime increase years ago due to the complete right to self defense by honest ctizens

"The researchers said there was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.
They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen."

Hmmm...weren't the anti-gunners saying the exact same thing about pistols?

"In contrast, a pointed long blade pierces the body like "cutting into a ripe melon".

So now we have the obigatory graphic description of what one of these heinous "assault" weapons can do.

"The study found links between easy access to domestic knives and violent assault are long established."

Interesting. If such studies were long established then why weren't knives banned along with firearms? Couldn't be that they didn't want to take away too much too soon?...nah.

"The researchers say legislation to ban the sale of long pointed knives would be a key step in the fight against violent crime."

Funny how again this was the same language used when banning firearms. Of course when violent crime increased after the firearm ban they had to find another inanimate implement to blame the increase on. Can't be blaming people now can we.

i'm not sure i want to get into another foreign gun debate. i don't want to be a part of your predictable circle jerk.

but,
i use large pointed sharp knives in the kitchen. although i also have a favourite cleaver, i rely on LARGE POINTED KNIVES for a lot of my food preparation.

i mentioned it over a year ago now, that a friend of mine was killed with a kitchen knife. if people like myself who are personally effected by this sort of thing are not calling for a ban on any kitchen knives - which as far as i've seen - we're not. who on earth is?

afraid people.
they are the DEMOLISHION COWS of society. all you have to do is construct a boogeyman in a strategic spot and you can predictably destroy anything you want under a trample of a '5-second-memory populace' screaming in terror - yet again - that the sky is falling.

ok that is said...

---------------------
---------------------

the other side of the coin.
lets settle down, and look at this sanely.
They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen.
this is an interesting point, i think the most pertanent. if they DO want to do something useful instead of just trying to stir ppl up and get them cranky (as i've already displayed); then what they need to do is organise a soft educational campaign - by chefs - to stop using these big knives.
the first ones to go to are celebrity chefs - ones on the telle. get them aware of the issue, and perhaps they will be glad to help. perhaps they will encourage their audience in use of smaller knives.

the problem as i see it, is that I as many other people have been trained to skillfully use large sharp knives in the kitchen. it's what we know best. i don't even USE a pairing knife.

if they want to change how dangerous/long/pointy knives are in the kitchen then they need to start right now training people outof the use of the larger knives.

Freud would probably tell us all that we are cutting vegetables with phallic objects anyway :P. mmm big knives.

No matter how many practical things you take away from people, they will still find ways to kill eachother if they want to. Who would want to use a cleaver to cut an apple? Not me. Who would want to have to have knives that were flattened, or dull on the end? Not me. Ever try to skin an animal with a cleaver? I haven't, but I'm sure its no easy task.

You can have my Case folding knife

...when you pry it from my cold, dead hands ! bwahahahahahahahahahhaha

I have a suggestion. Why don't they just mandate that everyone in Britain always wear big, puffy, fluffy mittens ALL THE TIME. Caught without your mittens - Ha! Throw the blighter into the tower!!

That would never fly, anyone with the slightest bit of creativity would figure out how to use those mittens to easily conceal a knife or other deadly weapon in no time.

Until society adresses the root cause of this type of violence to the fullest extent possible, it will continue. Banning, guns, knives, toothpicks, or long fingernails will do no good. If someone is motivated to kill, a killing will take place.

I agree... if we're going to go around banning things, we'll need to ban everything that's hard (it could be used as a weapon), as well as all limbs that could possibly be used to cause injury (I.E. legs and arms). The only way to deal with this kind of thing is to deal with the cause behind it.

The only way to avoid people murdering others is to lock them up in individual padded boxes and launch them out into outer space. If you're going to do that, you'll kill the human race through boredom.

Or we could remove every object with any sort of rigidity, and cut off all limbs, teeth, and any other thing that could have the most remote possibility of harming anyone at all.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, just as dumb a solution.

I would say the root cause is government. They control the courts and the jails. They are obviously not doing a good job at it. Government keeps on letting violent criminals back out on the street and filling up prisons with people that break victimless crime laws. The only "solution" the politicians can come up with is taking peoples rights away to create an even more dangerous situation. Pathetic.
