Ok, this has me pissed off.

So I finally get annoyed enough with NAV to say bye bye (this was a while ago).
I grabbed AVG Anti-virus free edition.
Sounds good, seems to work well.

I go to uninstall NAV and I get the oh so lovely error stating navnt.isu is corrupted or cannot be found.
So I go around the 'net looking for answers and I find a way to remove NAV 2k. Peachy.
I restart. All seems peachy until I get a message from windows stating that my hardware configuartion has been altered enough to warrent a re-activation of windows.
WTF?

So I try to re-activate windows, and that fails.
Why? Says my key has been re-activated to many times.
This is BS. I've only activated windows once since I bought this copy.
Now, I bought the OEM version of XP Pro to save some money, but I didn't buy it with a new computer, so I'm not sure I want to contact MS support.

Any ideas how to get it activated again short of buying an entirely new copy of xp?

I uninstalled Norton a few weeks ago and noticed it left a number of things in the 'run' area in the registry. A few other problems also cropped up. In windows explorer, I can no longer use the 'find' funtion. When I try, the left panel of the window just goes solid black.
Nor can I use windows update in IE. I just get a blank screen with 'done' at the bottom.
Strange.

looks like you have got hit by one of the scripts that targets the older nav. go to symantecs site and d/l the clean and removal tool for nav and live update. use that and also go thought your users application folders , program and common file folders to remove any other leftovers and then finish that with a reliable registy cleaning tool. after that go to microsoft and download a fresh copy of windows script and install (also availble in sp2). your pc should be ready now to start installing new stuff with out any probs now.

Best way to get rid of NAV is to format. But not a very lazy route so only do it if you have the time and backup hard drives to match.

I uninstalled Norton only to find my network is buggered up on one side. One PC can access this, but this cannot gain access to that.

Very unstable now too.

And I thought XP Pro didn't need activation?

XP Pro requires activation. I believe some 'corporate editions' are the ones that don't.

I had to call M$ once because office was bitching about wanting to be re-activated. I just called them and they gave me a key -- no hassle.

s. eddie: exactly what windows file is needed? I searched for 'windows script' at M$ downloads and didn't get anything that looked right.

Norton itself is a f--kin' virus. It wraps its slimy tentacles around your machine and takes it down when it goes.

Anyhow, all OEM versions of Windows XP require activation keys from Microsoft. You'll have to give them a call (you talk to a computer the whole time while some tech giggles in the backroom, I'm sure) to get a new key.

I once reformatted a computer for someone, and they wanted Norton Internet Security on it. After the format the computer took about 30 seconds to boot up. Then I installed Norton; 30 seconds became 6 minutes.

symptoms are apps simply not working, missing sections on the app window itself and can solve quite a few other hair pulling odd happernings.

Norton is designed to out-virus viruses; that's how it does its job. It installed registry keys in every program installed before and after I installed it--corporate edition isn't quite so virulent, which is why I use it instead of standard editions.

Well, after a reboot or 2 (and an attempted system restore from a week ago) re-activation worked just fine.

Eddie, I did use a removal tool from symantec's site, but it was only for NAV/NIS, Live* is still there. Damn Symantec to hell and back.

I downloaded that windows script and it fixed everything. Incredible!

another vote for anti-vir.

it even catches viruses that are embedded in webpages.
