Screen shrinkage

So O.K., here I come again, hat in hand for advice.
Screen size will suddenly narrow by half but elongate such that I cannot access command at the top or bottom (such as when in microsofts Word).Screen is also much darker. When I reboot screen is normal and stays that way for varying amounts of time. When the screen is narrowed, I cannot use the monitor controls by pusing the monitors control button.
I'm thinking either the monitor is going (yet when the screen is normal and I go into control panel/settings all is normal) or the vid card is dying.
Any thoughts before I start swapping things out? (this involves a spare computor so time is not a critical factor)
Win xp pro is O.S.

Try swapiing the screen and use the PC for awhile. If it continues try the card.

when the fault appears use the print screen key, it can
help sort out what the cause is, video card or display.

Someone should close and or delete this thread since it is a duplicate. Also eddie, I hope you were joking because that is one of the more silly responses I have seen to date for a monitor problem. ;)

I seem to remember a Seinfeld episode that was about 'shrinkage.'
