I'm having an odd problem getting D2 running on my machine, and 2 of my friends are running into the same problem, but we've gotten it running on several other machines no problem. I followed these instructions to the letter to get D2 working on my computer:

http://home.arcor.de/hbredel/Descent/De ... glish.html

When I try to launch the game with d2x-w32.exe, I get a black screen for a couple secs, then it just comes back to my desktop. If I set it to Win98 compatibility, it does the same thing, but leaves a d2x-w32 process running in my task manager. If I try to launch with d2x-gl.exe, my comp switches resolution to 640x480 and shows my desktop, but it's essentially locked up (no mouse) until I ctrl-alt-del to get back to my task manager and kill the application.

I've tried re-installing several times, and followed the instructions to the letter each time, and even got the latest d2x-w32 (1.4.26), and always get the same result. I'm running on a 1.8Ghz Athlon XP w/512MB RAM and an Nvidia GeForce2 MX card w/32MB RAM, so I don't think hardware is the issue.

Any ideas??? Thanks in advance.

Change either your resolution or refresh rate in Windows and try again.

ALso, if you're trying "full screen" for D2x, then try going wo window mode or vice versa.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but neither worked. I still get the same problem, even after trying those. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Did you try the newest version of D2X-W32?

If so, try editing d2x.ini and putting a semicolon in front of the -fullscreen command to start D2X-W32 in windowed mode.

You may also want to create a fresh D2 install somewhere else on your HD and install D2X-W32 there.

And don't use the d2x.ini file from the hbredel web site.
