Block kids from web sites.

I have a friend who's kids are getting old enough to be on the web and he would like to be able to "porn proof" the internet.

What programs (free if possible) or procedures are there for protecting them?

easy: lock the computer up.

If he's worried about it, then he shouldn't let them on without him watching.

Shameless plug: Go to staples and get the "Anti-Virus Internet Defense System". It's actually made by Panda, so it's a real product. It comes with content control. $69.99, and whoever sells it to you gets that much credited towards their Extended Service Plan goal for the week. You're helping out your kids, you're helping out the salesman by geting the sales manager off their back, and your helping out everyone else by making that associate less motivated to force those useless service plans on customers. This is coming from someone who's sold $360 in sales plans this week. :P

Software is not a replacement for proper parenting.

... and a good pair of wire cutters. ;)

Very true Mobius. HAving a 15 y/o, I will say that no amount of parenting will stop a pop-up, spam and curiousity.

;)

Software makes a nice safety net.

Fortress seems to be a very solid piece of software at my mom's school. the technology teacher and i talk alot, and he has actually invited me to try to break fortress's security.

lets just say i spent 4 hours with no results. i tried every backdoor and workaround on all the browsers available.

Ferno does pretty good at that stuff. Maybe he should take a whack at it.

The only real way to make sure nobody can break the protection is to set up a transparent proxy between the Internet connection and the switch and make sure it's both physically and electronically secured from prying hands.

heh.. you're not gonna have very good luck with it. Here's a story my friend Cam told me (one of the guys I commute with): If you visit a site dedicated to Ford Mustangs and click on a link called 'bodywork', up pops a site called 'Angel Bodywork' which then spawns a porn site. not just any porn site, a teenage porn site.

First line of defense: get firefox. it has a popup blocker as a feature. Of course some site coders are finding ways around it, but so far only a few have figured it out.

Unfortunately there really is no surefire way to 'porn-proof' the internet. best thing you can do is teach the kids how to handle themselves when they do encounter it.
