Upgrading... advice?

Post by Defender »

I might be upgrading soon.
Thinking about nabbing an Athlon64 3000 & a Gefore 6600GT.
Are the 6800GTs worth that extra 100 bucks at this point?

Also, any motherboard recommendations to go with the cpu?

I'm looking to spend ~$200 or so on the cpu & ~$200-300 on the vid.

Yeah, I would go ahead and spend the extra on the 6800 GT, a 3000+ and 6800 GT are a very solid matchup.

For the motherboards, you may want to splurge and buy a motherboard that has at least one PCIe x16 slot, that will help to keep your upgrade options for video cards open much later. Of course that does mean spending a bit extra on a 6800 GT PCIe now, but if at some much later date you can instantly upgrade to dual core and a 7800 GTX for cheap, it will definately pay off. DFI makes some pretty good NF4 boards, I'd look into them.
