This time, I agree with the aforementioned comment. All this astrology-type stuff is pretty weird.

Besides, humanity discovered there were actually far more than 5 elements as long ago as the 14th or 15 century (I think we now know 112 or something along those lines, but the exact possible number is unknown - they just last a shorter time) - and none of the original five came into the equation at all...

Water: Not an element; water is a compound of two elements.
Air: Not an element; it tends to be a mixture of pure elements and compounds, depending on the situation.
Fire: Not an element either; fire is just superheated air.
Earth: Definitely not an element; varies greatly in composition, and is usually not pure by any means.
Spirit (actually they kind of made this up - I don't think anyone ever settled on a quintessence): Uh. I won't even start - if it's not physical, how can it be an element?

And generally the star sign thing is pretty dumb also. The only physical influence they have on this world is a tiny pin-prick of light during the night-time, and an immeasurably small gravitational pull. That really isn't enough to do anything.

In a metaphysical sense, well, dude, they'd have to be either sentient (yeah, right) or have some weird kind of psychic 'force' over the world to actually influence anything. And uh. If you're going there I think it's a rather simplistic analysis of things.

End of the story; people made it up to make money, best ignore them. :)

The surveys that I've always enjoyed taking are the personality type ones, like the ENTP/ISFJ (and all the combinations in between) ones with at least some root in psychology, although I do believe that making Internet quizzes out of them is certainly taking them out of their element. :o

it's representative of course.

ok i studied the source and linked the questions with their tested elements. you should be able to see the representations. they are generalisations of personality qualitys we all share to some extent - they are simple archtypes.
you shouldn't just dismiss them, they are quite important. studying ancient mysticism like this shows ancient societys' inherent religions, how they explained/understood their world around them, and even their basic psychology ideologys.

of course they have nothing scientificly to do with the actual ancient element. they are just representative. there are many representative ways that we use today to describe people. sometimes we refer to people as having animal like qualitys: "eagle-eye" "huggy-bear". it's similar to that - but it makes more global sense of course since not all places have the same animals ;), but all places have these ancient elements. think about it.
another example of how we use abstract representations today would be the overly simple refering to various traits of things as being GOOD or EVIL or the less abstract: black and white.

in our societys we still do things like this, we refer to people and things as having rather abstract and nonscientific properties. a lot of time is spent trying to merge these theorys we have with our understanding of science. one scientific example of this attempt of merging theorys is how we refer to various brain neurotransmitters by how they make you feel.

ok, here's what questions effect what elements.
they all have a positive effect on the score for the respective element except for that one "spirit" question (that i list last) that effects negatively.
also remember, this quiz may not have been written by a professional in interpreting these things:

AIR
Do you consider yourself aloof, unreachable on certain levels?
Do you spend much of your time in intellectual pursuit?
Are you a gossipy chatterbox?
Do you like to communicate your ideas with others?
How often do you dream about planning the rest of your life?

WATER
Are your feelings easily hurt?
How often do you express your emotions?
Are you a modest person?
How compassionate are you, concerning others?
Do you often feel insecure or shy around others?

FIRE
Would you consider yourself to be an aggressive personality?
Are you egotistical? (Do you most of your sentences begin with "I"?)
How stubborn are you?
Do you get angry easily?
Are you excited about trying new things, full of enthusiasm?

EARTH
Are you materialistic -- is "having stuff" everything to you?
Had you rather follow "tried and true" ways of doing something than try something new?
Do you believe that slow and steady wins the race?
How often are you on time to your appointments?
Do you often keep commitments that you make to yourself and others?

SPIRIT
Do you find that living in the physical realm actually causes you physical pain, even though you are
Do you often feel as if you are floating or walking on clouds?
Do you have a strong sense of balance, harmony and joy in your life?
Had you rather spend the vast majority of your time in deep meditation, contemplating the divine?
Are material things important to you? (<- answer scores negatively)

Actually, it goes back to Plato. You know the five Platonic Solids? (You might not; follow the link). Plato corresponded them to the four elements--the cube to earth (for its stability), the tetrahedron to fire (for its lightness), the octahedron to air, and the icosahedron to water. This left him with a fifth solid and no element, so he corresponded the dodecahedron to "the heavens". (He argues that the thirty edges and twelve faces of a dodecahedron correspond naturally to the months of the year and days in a month.) This didn't sit too well with his followers, who later postulated a fifth element, ether, to go with the dodecahedron. I've seen it as "spirit" or "astral" in modern pagan or mythological writings (granted, of the same level of authority as this quiz, but then paganism doesn't do authority), and that seems like a reasonable re-interpretation to me.

In fact, the reasoning remained unchanged for a long time. Johannes Kepler followed Plato's correspondence of the Platonic solids to "elements". He also tried to make the platonics correspond to the five known planets at the time, by successively inscribing them in each other and getting something (very roughly) approximating the five orbits.

It does seem like nonsense to us today, and we are shocked that history's great minds so easily were swayed by what any bright high-schooler these days would consider spurious reasoning. To me, it provides a good insight into how ancient people thought. And it illustrates that such correspondences--element, month, constellation, platonic solid--were originally accepted because they were an intuitively appealing way to meaningfully explain the universe. That makes them good mythology, which is what they still are. And good mythology is pretty much what Paganism shoots for.

to take what dedman & jeff250 were elluding to further.
to link the jung/MBTI types to the ancient elements would likely be something like this:

Air - NT the rationals
Water - NF the idealists
Fire - SP the artisans (with a bit of a T vibe too)
Earth - SJ the guardians

spirit - i'm not sure. to me it seems a mixture of air (NT) and water (NF). it definitely seems the polar opposite of earth.

sirus and mobius. i think you would both score highly on AIR (edit: oh, i see sirus already did). but it depends on your motivation for hating this, if your motivation for hating this is because you think it's stupid and non-inteliectual. then AIR it is.
however if you hate it because it's too "out there" and a frivolous persuit. then EARTH it is.

Posted: Tue Jul 05, 2005 3:56 am
by Sirius
I don't hate it, I just think it's a bit ridiculous. :) Personality types are fine and at its root that's all it shows - but equating it to essences is somewhat imprecise, and equating it to signs of the zodiac, spurious at best.

I think that the perpetuation of these surveys (especially on places like "MySpace," although also on forums) is largely based on ego stroking. I mean, all they do is return the answers to your questions (things you knew already anyways) right back to you except in a much more complementary form, but all under the guise of some arbitrary category, like an astrological sign, to hide the fact that, instead of the survey merely telling you exactly what you want to hear, this is some preordained quality.

When one answers yes to a bunch of questions asking if the user thinks that he or she is funny and that he or she likes to joke around, should that same user really be startled, flattered, or enlightened when revealed to be Hysterica, god of all funniness and charmer of all women?
