Been deep into digital cameras for a while now, but I now decided to take the plunge into SLR's in order to grow and learn. Just made the purchase online this morning. Here's the specs. Any other photographers here? And if so, what would your suggestions for a newbie be?
Canon Digital Rebel XT (Black)
Canon 580EX SPEEDLITE
3PC LENS CLEANING KIT
SANDIK ULTRA II 1 GIG COMPACT FLASH
CANON EF 28-135 F3.5-5.6 USM IMAGE STABILIZER LENS
CANON EF 50 MM F1.8 STANDARD AUTO FOCUS
DIGPRO ALL-PURPOSE DELUXE GADGET BAG
DURACELL 4 PACK AA ALKALINE BATTERIES

Rebel XT is a great beginner camera. I own the older non digital Rebel G and it was an awesome camera. My buddy bought the Rebel (300D) and takes awesome pics. I'm holding out for the 20D myself.

I've had a 300D (DRebel original) since September '03 and love it. I'd recommend the new XT version without reservation - ALTHOUGH, if you're really on a budget you might consider an original 300D at closeout pricing.
I shoot mostly landscape & use pBase for online sharing:

Um, wtf are you thinking with a title like that, tongue-in-cheek tho it may be?
In addition to the gear you mentioned, you'll probably want a decent tripod. Not a sub-$50 one, but something rock-solid with a heavy-duty head.
Good luck wit the new gear!

Well, to give an update, the customer service rep at buydig pissed me off so I ended up buying locally. Of course local prices can't compete with internet vendors, so I had to forgo on a few things, mainly the external flash, but I'm very pleased with what i have. Took it out on it's maiden voyage outdoors this morning and she performed VERY well. I'll post a few shots on my site after a while. I shoot in Raw, so there's a bit of postprocessing time involved.

Using RAW is wise, using RSE wisest. Follow linky to RSE/Essentials - free & better than PhaseOne's payware CaptureOne/LE, which I own.

The internal flash will do for most things until you start doing this to get paid for.

Get yourself some
rechargeable NiMH batteries.
I would recommend the
Maha C401FS with a pack of either PowerEx or Energizer NiMHs, rated at at least 2300mAh (2500mAh is better, but even 2300mAh kicks alkaline's butt in a single charge). That charger is the only one I've seen that is supposed to actually neutralize the NiMH memory effect: "FLEX NEGATIVE pulse charging actually removes the crystal structure formed on battery electrodes (which is the source of "memory effect") and conditions your rechargeable batteries as they are being charged."
Here's a good outlet:
http://www.thomas-distributing.com/index.htm. That's where I got
mine for my new digital camera. My camera takes 4 AAs, so I got the Maha C401FS + PowerEx 2300mAh 8-pack combo, so that I could always have a charged pack on hand.
