It's not so much the "space" part. It's the "how much space" part which is the killer.

ALL Internet satelites are in Geosynchronous Orbit, at around 32,000 kilometres altitude. That's a 64,000K round trip. Even at "C", that's still a fair whack of time involved. PLUS, satelite Internet services are not set up for latency - they're set up for bandwidth - so there's a lot of buffering and buggering round with the data before it even gets sent skywards.

I'm just surprised that you're surprised!

Oh, plus, you're uploading at 33Kb/s which is the maximum a 56K can handle.

Wasn't V.92 supposed to fix the upload speed to something much more similar to the max downstream speed allowed on the line? Or was that just a farce?

When I was on dialup, I made it my mission to get the best dialup ever. I rerouted my line straight from my computer to the outside NID. Called the phone company and bitched until they came out and inspected the line for problems. They found them and not only fixed them, but put me on fibre from the switch to the station so that my total copper connect was about 1 mile.
Went out and tried every single modem I could, tweaked settings and finally wound up with a consistent connection that would download at 49.9K~50.6K and upload at 33.2K.
The 33.2K irked me, so I updated my firmware, all the way up to v.92, tried even more modems but found nothing that would get it above 33.2K.
So, finally, I called the phone company since I'd done everything I could on my end, and asked them why on earth I couldn't get faster than 33.2K. Well, most of the people there were unsympathetic and thought 33.2K was great and why was I bitching. So, I explained the them that I wasn't bitching so much as I was wondering why, when I had just about the greatest dialup connection that god himself could give a man, why was I limited to 33.2K up.
I was told after getting to tier 2 or 3 tech support that due to hackers, that they limit the upload speed on all dialup connects to 33.2K but that this was an improvement over the previous 28.8K upload cap. I tried in vain to explain that if I had a cable or DSL connection, my upload rate would wallop a dialup connect so why on earth would they limit dialup only.
My guess is the phone companies really don't like dialup users because they usually don't get paid for it, and the digital signal can cause problems with other peoples lines.

IIRC, the spec says its supposed to be around 48kbps, but like Sheep said it all depends on your ISP.

At any rate, you're a bit out of date Mobi. Satelite has been both ways for some time now.

heh I once played against this guy who had satellite. his latency was 9,000 ms. It took 14 Fusion blobs and 4 megas to kill him. LOL
