It's time for Xciter to move this forum to a new box he can personally oversee, like he said he would.

Don't know what happened, but when I was bored I couldn't come and spam the DBB, so I got a lot of little projects done.

I don't recommend that you run on windows, but... if you must:

get php

install php on the computer

setup php in iis (cgi version only, please)

read mysql installation manual

get and install mysql database

cross fingers.

... this is just an overview. You still have to setup user accounts, databases, etc. You may have to run the phpbb installation routines again, too.

It's really pretty simple, check out my last creation http://www.scoutclub.net/forum/

It's running on a machine running windows server 2003, it took a little work but all in all not too difficult.

You'll need to install MySQL had one heck of a time getting phpbb running with MSSQL matter of fact both are running the scoutdata.net side utilizes MSSQL while the scoutdata.net side runs MySQL.

I also had to install php but after that no big deal. make sure you lock it down from a security point though!

Remember to use php4 not php5, phpbb needs to be modded to run on php5. And it's also probably a better idea to stick to MySQL4 instead of 5, tho I believe phpbb works on MySQL5.

I have had very little trouble running phpbb on windows, the only major difference is I ran it off Apache not IIS.

You probably want to use something like phpadmin to admin mysql, it should save you some headaches. I use it to set the permissions on everything the first time around.

Well you're going to want to get FastCGI if you're running PHP on IIS. Don't use the ISAPI module, because it runs in the context of IIS. If PHP crashes under FastCGI, only PHP crashes.

I'd go with apache2 + mysql + php.

if no OS is better than another, I'd seriously suggest maintaining the current configuration that the DBB is running on now.

Why fix what isn't broken?

If I was setting up the DBB all over again this would be what I would implement.

Just my two cents :)

JIm,

Is Kevin going to cover the domain name fees or shall I?

Regards,

Mike

Ok. I'll take care of it but haven't played Descent in years nor really used the DBB in years myself but I don't want to see the community be without it :)
