im working on a friends PC. and installing a new mobo on a already configured WinXP setup.
what is the name of that program that you guys use to wipe out all the mobo drivers, so you can install a new one wihtout having to re-install XP?
quickie question about DC-DDR. i have twin identical 512 2700 sticks.
dual channel confuses me. do i have to run single channel to get both 512's to combine or can i use dual channel and still have the total 1024?
OH YEAH! go ahead and fire away at the CS Masters jokes. i need to hear those again.

i just go with reinstalling from scratch for my clients builds. i find its just easier to do the install just once rather than messing about with the original install and spending a few hours cleaning out the reg and associated files. its also a damn site harder if the client has had any sort of encyption applied to the accounts.
ddr, just add the mem to the correct slots and the mb useally auto-selects the dual channel mode, and you dont loose mem in the process unlike raid for example.

well, a problem exists there.....
no XP cd.... thats the first.
second...no encryption of anykind. that i know because he doesnt know how to do it, and i checked the drive on my machine.
so whats the name of this program, i dont have the time to drive 45 mins to get the CD i used from my friend. id rather allow the registry to fix itself and XP do its own work.

You can boot into safe mode and blow them away that way, if they aren't listed under add/remove programs.

Yes, it will read as 1GB in dual channel mode. It will read 1GB either way, its just the access method thats different. To get it to run in dual-channel mode, just install one stick in bank 0, and the second in bank 2. (first slot, then the third slot)

one way of killing your drivers
start, run, type "cmd" then type
"set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1"
next type
"start devmgmt.msc"
in the view tab, check "show hiddern devices"
any greyed out devices can be safely uninstalled/deleted
the others are active/installed and are the ones you can remove to kill your pc.

Dude, if you have the license then you can legally download an XP ISO (of the same variety that the license is for. ie: XP Home License legally allows you to have a copy of XP Home, etc.) Matter of fact, you can probably just buy a license straight from MS and save a bundle. Last I looked, which was some time ago, they went for around $45 or so.

To further explain the dual channel memory: both single channel and dual channel will add the two sticks together to form 1024 MB of system memory. In single channel mode the memory will be accessed using a single 64 bit wide channel, in dual channel mode the memory access uses both channels to form a single 128 bit wide memory interface.
Your friend is confusing single / dual channel with RAID0 and RAID1. If you were to parallel them in RAID, single channel would be JBOD, and dual channel would be RAID0.
