Shrinking AVI files

My digital camera can record AVI videos, but the output file sizes are crazy huge (350+mb for a 10 minute clip at 320x240, 30fps). Anyone have recommendations for free software to reencode those as smaller files with similar quality? TIA.

Check into
XviD if you don't need to share them with others (not a lot of people have the XviD codec installed). Otherwise you might need to go hunting for Windows Video (WMV) encoders.

I've been using virtual dub for a couple of years now. It's good. DivX 6.0 is a much better codec than the old 5.x DivX - so I recommend you use that.
Virtual Dub often can't open AVI files directly, and you will need the 1.74 version of "VFAPIreader" (Not 1.76 or 1.82 - these don't make usable D2V files).
