this week's mediawatch should be relevant to all. As i understand USA has similar anti-sedition laws. (probabaly snuck in hidden in some other non-related legislation eh?)

(choose one of the 4 video links to the right of the page - under ABC Broadband).

the 3rd segment (skip to it if you want) about Australia's new Sedition Laws is what i'd like to bring your attention to. Mediawatch looks at the frightening powers these new Sedition laws can give the government.

Ironicly the ABC (Australian Broadcast Corporation) TV channel is a government funded channel. For some reason, here in Australia government funded media outlets have absolutely no qualms about biting the hand that feeds them, in fact they are the MOST brazen of all. It's the way it should be really.

I'm worried about all these anti-terrorism laws, they all seem more like a powergrab :(.

I always cringe when I read about something like this, even tho I understand the intent it can absolutly be used in a wrong manner. I think we need to know the difference between freedom of speach and hate speach.

Reminds me of the Alien and Sedition Acts that John Adams implemented as a way of preventing anyone from criticizing the government; thankfully, Jefferson let those die as soon as he took office. More recently, I know there was some type of anti-sedition legislation enacted during WWII, but I can't recall the exact details. I don't know about anything beyond that, but I don't think that anything we have enacted goes as far as this would. After hearing what John Pilger had to say, I think he's an utter insensitive douchebag, but I've heard the same or worse over here, and I've never heard of anyone getting in legal trouble over it. I'll definitely agree that that clause is a pretty dangerous statement that has a huge potential to restrict legitimate free speech.

Edit: As a side note, so that's what intelligent news reporting looks like! :P

Well lets see Roidy. First your govt. banned assault style rifles. Then they banned pistols and semi-auto shotguns. So now you are effectively stripped of self protection and now comes stringent Sedition laws. Starting to see a pattern here Roid?
