It worked about like this:
American people got really, really ticked off at British government.
American people think "Hey, British government is a long way off, can't send troops or resources very fast!"
American people revolt and blow the heck out of British troops.
British government responds with a sincere "OMGWTFBBQ!"
American people sit down, elect George Washington, and begin making "^_^" faces at British Government.

England, epitome of empirialism has no room to complain when a bunch it's citizens do unto the King what the king has done unto the world....
He should just request we call it Karma Land and it's all even.
Of course there must be a lawyer somewhere who thinks he has a shot at winning the case to have the Kings property returned

Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on the bus was illegal, as was MLK's leading a bus boycott (conspiracy to obstruct the operation of a business). Gandhi collecting salt on the shore was also illegal. The Boston Tea Party was illegal, the Continental Congress leading a rebellion was illegal, Susan B. Anthony voting in 1872 was illegal, Amirus Darrow III smuggling slaves to Canada on the underground railroad was illegal, John Scopes teaching evolution in Tennessee was illegal... and, yes, the formation of the US was illegal.

The deeper question then becomes not, "was it illegal?", but, "was it ethical?" or maybe even, "was it right?".
You'll get a lot more debate on the posted topic (and the people/events you mentioned) with those questions.
