USMC, on your 230th birthday. To all of those I knew that didn't make it back, I'll be sloshing a few down today in your memory.

If you tell a Marine that the Marines are a department of the Navy, his quick reply will be: Yes it is. It's the mens department.
Happy Birthday USMC.

100% Squid, USS Belleau Wood LHA-3 1978-1982
Quartermaster 2nd class
Army Quartermaster is a supply officer.
Navy Quartermaster is a Navigator/Helsman/Signalman/Weather guesser
I was 19 years old and driving an Aircraft carrier in and out of port. how cool is that

I take it Cuda, the Belleau Wood be a USMC based vessel. And ya, being the guy steering the ship had to have a little tension built in.

yep she was a Gator Freighter. 850 crew and 2500 grunts Including the airwing. and yea I had some harry moments, like when we were going into Perth at 10kts forward speed and the wind was blowing at 40kts from the side, I lost steerage way, that means I had no control over where the ship went
we were in a narrow channel and the tug had not yet come alongside. came awefull close to the break water when the tugs arrived.
they just decommissioned her on the 28th of October. I was a plank owner. I was on her commissioning crew. it's a REALLY wierd feeling to know that she's now gone from the Navy at only 28 years old

Nice pic of my home town there Cuda. I have been on the Midway (in the background). If you have a chance, you should take the tour. It's pretty cool.

A friend of mine was a marine guard (you know, the guy that locks you in the brig when you screw up) on the USS Ranger. Visited him once when his boat was docked up in 'Frisco. I was speechless at the size of a aircraft carrier (and the Ranger ain't a big one) when I first walked up to it. Kinda like a floating factory.
Nice pic of your boat Cuda.
